Q: If I want to install using outside mount for a 34 1/2 wide window, should I order 38 or 39 width? Directions say 4" but then give example adding 8"?

Outside mount depends how much of your trim you want to over, but I suggest overlapping 1/2" inch so light won't show. If you mount above the trim on wall, you also need to take into consideration the projection of the brackets so when pulling down shade there is no interference.

Q: Has anybody done an outside mount above their windows and can provide pictures in the reviews? How sturdy is the outside mount?

I did outside mount on my French doors, brackets are very sturdy and strong, but don't hang on them.

Q: Are there tie downs for base to keep from blowing?

There are no tie downs on these shades.
