You must know this table is just 18 lbs. I suggest that if the weather is really good and the umbrella is not so heavy, you do not need other weight, or you may need to add more wieght to keep your umbrella stable. A square stand is better than a round stand, and the overall height is better not taller than 18in. Please notice, if you add an extra weight, the frame inside the table is not need.

Q: Can I use an umbrella base with it? Do the bottom slats get in the way of that, and if so, could I leave them off?

Hi, I use an umbrella base under mine plus I added extra weights on top of the base and it all fits under the table and doesn't show. I live in a very windy place. The table is sturdy enough without the bottom slats. Assemble the table without the bottom slats.
