Outstanding
Incredible book. Much respect to the work of John M. Alegro. Not a book to pick up and put down.I'd recommend delving into the topics of this book before reading it.(I.e religion, ancient translations, ancient cultures, psychedelic altered states of consciousness etc.)If these are of keen interest to you. This book will flip your whole world upside down!Very convincing data. But also questionable. The mystery to the truth of our past is so exhilarating.I always felt i was born too late to discover the earth and too early to discover the heavens. But right now we are at a revolutionary time in the human story or rediscovering our past, who we are and where we came from. And my word is it compelling!Big love to all.

Comprehensive etymological basis of biblical words
Extremely informative for knowing the truth regarding the etymological basis of biblical words; irrelevant to agree with the author's conclusions as is packed with enough research-based, peer reviewed truths. Need to take in every sentence as each builds on previous one. Learn something new in every sentence. Perfect for the open-minded and believers alike. Avoid if you're a believer whose faith is easily shaken by information too fact-based for church. It's complimented my faith rather than led me to conclude that Jesus was a mushroom rather than a real person and the Messiah.

We know that areas of brain function are still to ...
We know that areas of brain function are still to be researched. Some are normaly inaccessible except under drug induced or naturally occurring psychotic states etc. This area has been often and vividly activated under such conditions. Surely therefore this book must be a tool to assist current research that will help us make the connection. Are we wired for god....was Jesus a mushroom..... This book is therefore a "must" to help discover why we have been given this "inaccessible" area of the brain. Rosie Harper.

Good but not what i was expecting
The book is very much more of an academical study of languages and particular words than it is a deciphering of the new testament texts and what they were really trying to convey. There is a part of that to the book but its mainly about the root of the words used and their mushroom origins. In conclusion there is probably something to it..(that Christianity is basically a cover up for the mushroom cults of the day)

Wicked Book
Every now and then an author comes up who truly looks deep and then writes about it to let us know some truths which at most hurt. To be able to get so much info in one book that's worth it in itself let alone when the subject matter is not one which many authors like to get into unless you are John M Allegro.

This is more of an essay than a book but still a great read.
I have not finished this book yet but I have enjoyed it as stated it is a group of essays but very interesting all the same.

Livro interessante
O livro é curioso em alguns pontos, e histórico em outros, mas em alguns pontos se perde na ideia principal e tudo se torna o culto aos cogumelos.

Hard to read on kindle
Interesting perspectives on psilocybin and Christianity. While I don't necessarily agree with the majority of what is written, the author definitely drew my attention to some key symbolism in the OT.

More for the Pleasure of Philology
This is a fun read if you want to hear a philologist make a fun and compelling argument. My scholastic opinion. I wouldn't really put too much onus on one person's argument as an opportunity to come "the truth" on any subject. There are many compelling arguments that discard Allegro's views. Off the top of my head, there's the cost of transcription, the loss of human life, and the choice of the amanita muscaria mushroom as his specified psychedelic. I find it hard to believe that someone would be willing to be torn apart by lions, skinned alive, crucified, etc., over a psychoactive plant that pretty much the entirety of the ancient world was well aware of, i.e. Natural History by Pliny The Elder. Not to mention the other recent historical findings that this book couldn't have accounted for since its publication predates them.Would I recommend it? Absolutely! Pleasurable read! Would I put religious value in it as a debunking of Christianity, well of course not. I would never put all my belief in a single argument, by a single author, in a single book. That would be foolishness.
