Ronia, the Robber's Daughter

Adventure, friendship, courage
Astrid Lindgren's characters teach us so much and are the role models for our children. Ronja for example is not afraid to get into uncomfortable situations if it's for the higher good and defense her friendship. She is brave and courageous and goes her own way in every adventure.

If you liked the series, get the book too! Or vice-versa
We got this book after watching the Anime series on Amazon Video. My four year old boy loved the series, and after a while he got all of us to love it, too. Only when the show was over did I realize it's based on a book, so I got the book here on Amazon. It turns out the show follows the book almost perfectly, which if you do the math means each of 26 episodes only needs to cover 7 pages to reach the book's 176 pages. No wonder! nothing much ever happened in an episode. We used to joke about it, but it was still fun to watch.Yes, this *is* a book review. As soon as we finished the series, I started reading the book to him, and it's been fun because he already knows the story. While I read he fills in upcoming details as he remembers things. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't be able to read him such a grownup book. And as any parent with four kids knows, it gets pretty awful reading the same dumb pre-K books over and over, kid after kid, on and on to doomsday. The book uses slightly different names than the series. The big change is "Mattis" in the Anime, and "Matt" in the book. He got mad at me when I read "Matt" the first few times, so I started translating it to "Mattis" for him. Of course I only did it right 80% of the time, and after a while he got mad when I said "Mattis" and wanted me to just say "Matt". When I read "Little Pip" in the book, he remembered that in the TV show it was "Little Snip." Did I mention he's a super genius!Anyway, if you liked the series, get the book too! Or vice-versa

Delightful story
This is a delightful story, with just the right mix of excitement, humor, magic, thoughtfulness, warmth. Astrid Lindgren was an astute observer of humanity.Reading this book for the first time as a grownup I thoroughly enjoyed it.I am not sure though what age would be appropriate, for children to read this. It has some rather dark moments that - I think - would require / benefit from a certain maturity and life experience. This is not Pippi Longstocking where pretty much everything is all fun and games, not shallow, but not overly complex or thought-provoking.

Favorite book
I read this aloud to my 6 and 8 year old daughters. We all absolutely loved it-- Ronia is a fabulous, strong female lead, her dad is hilarious, her mom is the only logical adult in the fort, Noddle-Pete is endearing, the harpies are spooky, the rumphobs are adorable, etc etc. We're watching the series on Amazon now, and it follows the book very closely, which is unusual for a TV/film adaptation of a book. We love the series and it has confirmed that this is one of our favorite books we've ever read together (and we read a lot of books). We'll probably read it again.

read aloud book for both boys and girls
This beautifully written book, by Astrid Lindgren, appeals to boys and girls alike. It has stood the test of time because it speaks directly to the heart and soul of children. The setting, forests, forts and robbers, the different emotional nature and viewpoints of the characters, the equality of the two main characters - Ronia, the daughter of one robber band's chief and Birk, the son of the rival robber bands's chief-, the adventure, and the themes of loyalty, tolerance, love and forgiveness make it a story that will continue to appeal to children everywhere. I read it to my own children many years ago. They loved it. A few years ago, as a teacher of a mixed class of 9 year olds, I again read it with great success. As twelve year olds, and leaving for high school, a few boys told me how they still remembered it as the best book ever. I am again reading it to a class, this time to a very different group, more sophisicated eleven year olds. They are equally enthralled and are more conscious of some of the underlying themes which leads to good discussions. Using rich language and imagery, this book speaks at both a conscious and unconscious level without any hint of "preaching". I purchased two copies - one to pass on to my future grandchildren!

Strong young female lead!
Like a kids version of the clan of the cave bear...except totally different! My 7 year old daughter loved it, and my 3.5 year old boy was pretty mesmerized too. Def has some magical creatures that can be scary for littles, but I just adjusted language since I was doing the reading. (For example: harpies clawing our eyes and blood...along those lines). But other than those moments, we enjoyed the strong female role, the adventures of living off the forest, and overall theme.

This is perhaps among Lindgren's best books
This is perhaps among Lindgren's best books (my personal favorite being The Brother's Lionheart). Lindgren tends to circle around to timeless lessons of love, courage, stability, loyalty, and strength in her books - all qualities which are so powerful in shaping our internal landscape as children. Lindgren addresses these themes in Ronia with a profundity that most children are intuitively attuned to already, but which tends to be increasingly assailed as we grow older. Here Lindgren moves in to help show us how to preserve our humanity and grow into ourselves in a whole and honest way, and in this way she is radical in the way of things which reach deep and draw sustenance for years to come. She was one of the "greats" among children's authors, and among those who truly understood the sacred importance of a well lived childhood. Thus, this book is as much for parents and mentors, as well as for children - it's for the whole tribe! This book is best read aloud and as a family.

One of my favourite childhood books.
I have two copies and give them away regularly - especially to women who seem like they need to re-find their inner Ronja rövardotter.
