Lagaan (land tax) is a story set in ancient India, when the British ruled India and were levying heavy taxes on poor villagers. Lagaan Hindi movie revolves around a small village burdened by taxes and cursed by the rain gods. With lack of crop, they are unable to pay the tax to the ruling British regime. Trying to request for a respite from these taxes, they fall in an unusual situation and are challenged for a game of cricket, a sport that they have never heard of or seen before. They only have one choice, to accept the challenge or to pay double taxes. Bhuvan, played by Amir Khan in Lagaan, agrees to the bet and faces the fury of the rest of the villagers. The movie continues with how Bhuvan learns the sport courtesy Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley), a British girl, and in turn teaches the willing villagers. He coaxes the remaining and manages to build a whole cricket team and makes them ready for the final face off. The movie has an amazing background score which lives on even after 13 years since the movie's release.
