Product Description From the creators of Animatrix comes this visually-stunning new anime film based on a popular Japanese manga written by Taiyo Matsumoto. In Treasure Town, where the moon smiles and young boys can fly, life can be both gentle and brutal. This is never truer than for our heroes, Black and White, two street urchins who watch over the city, doing battle with an array of old-world Yakuza and alien assassins vying to rule the decaying metropolis. TEKKONKINKREET is a dynamic tale of brotherhood that addresses the faults of present day society, true love lost, and the kindness of the human heart. A brutal elegy for our changing times as well as a tour-de-force of visual artistry, TEKKONKINKREET is a deeply resonant story with a heart. The title TEKKONKINKREET is a play on the Japanese words for ‘concrete,' ‘iron,' and ‘muscle,' and it suggests the warring images of steel and concrete cities amassing against the powers of the imagination. Until now, at least in imports abroad, anime style has .co.uk Review Tekkonkinkreet is a landmark in the increasing cross-pollination between Japanese and American animation: Based on a manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, the film was made in Japan at Studio 4C, but directed by American Michael Arrias. The story unfolds in Treasure Town, a scabrous metropolitan slum so gritty it makes the viewer want to clean under his fingernails. Orphans White and Black share an existence at the fringes of an already marginalized subculture. White seems naive, if not learning disabled: at 11, he can't tie his shoes or dress himself. But he has an uncanny sixth sense about what's happening in Treasure Town. Older, streetwise Black looks after White and receives the emotional support he needs in return: they're two halves of a damaged whole. The arrival of a murderous yakuza boss who wants to demolish Treasure Town and build an amusement park draws Black and White into an escalating spiral of physical and emotional violence. Although the ending of Tekkonkinkreet feels needlessly obscure, it's a striking and often powerful film from a first-time director. A stunning piece of work.
I'm very fond a Japanese anime but (to my shame) this title had eluded me. I bought it primarily because it's one of the first animations on Blu-Ray and I was curious to assess the image quality. Well you live and learn: this film is extraordinary in the extreme. It's appears to be a simple tale of two boys living and surviving on the streets of a run down Japanese town but it becomes far more than that. Their names are 'Black' and 'White' and I would urge you to consider yin & yang at this point. The animation is amazing. There's so much detail in each frame that I wanted to frame (as in wooden) most of them. Sometimes the animation is deliberately simplistic but it all blends and builds magnificently. The high-definition really brings this out and any lover of anime will be drooling at this one. This is now one of my top 5 films and that's really saying something because I'm 43 years old and I've seen a lot of movies. I don't impress easily. If you like anime then just buy this, a no-brainer. If you like a thoughtful and interesting (but at times surreal) story then also buy this.Genius!

Epic fight between good and evil told in the most unorthodox and labirintine way possible.
I really struggle to review this anime. First, it is so puzzling a story that I doubt I can describe it. Decaying town and two kids caught in it. Yakuza. Police. Death and super humans. Chaotic events. Homeless people are the only ones feeling any compassion, the rest of them totally soulless. Ruined buildings and a super amusement park being built. When you start watching it doesn't make sense at all. Once I wanted to terminate the video but continued out of sheer stubbornness. And slowly, very slowly the story began to come together. It is a fight over the soul of the boy who is caught in some sort of a limbo, and the choice this boy makes will either save or destroy the planet. There was nothing straightforward about this story, not in the way we are used to in the West. But it was b-dy touching.

The biggest visual achievement in Japanese animation
This piece of art can place itself among the ranks of Akira, Ghost it the Shell, Paprika and Spirited Away.In good tradition of aforementioned masterpieces, this little gem picks you up, shakes you around and smashes you down with your jaw left on the floor minutes after the final credits have rolled. The story might not be very interesting, at first. But the visuals, o sweet roasted bbq chicken wings, the visuals...Make/order yourself some Japanese food, dim the lights and enjoy the fireworks!

Not the run of the mill piece of Animation or Anime .
I could not recommend this anymore to a fan of Animation be it western or Japanese anime as this is a work of art and hats off to Michael Arias and all the others that pulled this off also check out the Manga that it's based on also called TEKKONKINKREET that is written and drawn by Taiyo Matsumoto ( amazon sell the re-released version as it happens )and you will see just where the odd style artwork came from.

Great anime!
This is a great film. If you are a lover of anime such as Ghost in the shell, Akira or Elfen lief, this is definitely one of those titles that you have to have. The story deals with pretty adult themes, and it can sometimes be quite sad or even gruesome, so just like the other titles I mentioned, I'm don't recommend getting this for any children below 12 minimum.

Very good film
Good film, good story. The animation isn't the most amazing but the two lead characters are great. Altogether good and worth watching.

fantastic!
If you like 'Paprika', you'll like this one. It has a similar level of shifting reality and is visually stunningly beautiful, especially the backgrounds. The slightly plainer designed characters I understood as an intentioned contrast to the richness of their surroundings.Definitively worth getting the blu-ray for all the detail.
