Sophisticated, well done and complete. For experienced coders.
This arm is really well done and technically complete. There is a lot of depth to the user manual, and it covers just about everything. You will need to be an experienced programmer to do anything interesting. This is not a toy, do not buy it for someone else unless you know they can code in Python. My goal is to have it find a joystick that is within reach, and then operate the joystick as if a human was steering it. The project isn't done yet but this arm looks like it can do everything I want.Positives: The metal construction is sturdy and looks nice. It was packaged well and easy to assemble. The videos are helpful. The operating system is Ubuntu Linux which has a lot of support online. I used ChatGPT whenever I needed help, like how to initialize an SD card for backups, and it came right back with useful answers.Negatives: The Android app did not work, it just locked up with a blank screen. I used an iPad instead which worked fine. The user manual appears to be translated from Chinese to English and the translation is not perfect. A lot of the code examples have comments in Chinese and I used Google Translate to understand the comments (I speak English). It's not a blocker when you are trying to make progress, but is something to expect.Neutrals: This is my first robot and I had confusions along the way. I don't blame Hiwonder for that. More experienced hobbyists probably know things I was learning for the first time. Ex: The user manual mentions the SD card reader, and I was clueless about its purpose and I ignored it at first. The Raspberry Pi controller has an 8 GB mini SD card for persistent storage (there is no need for a hard disk) that I did not realize was on the underside. The SD card reader plugs into a computer where you can back up the SD card, or download an operating system.Tip: The most expensive version has additional sensors and props that you can buy separately. You won't be disappointed if you start out with the least expensive version and buy the add-ons later.Overall this is a great robot arm for a hobbyist. I have been going a little farther every day for almost two months and haven't lost interest.
