It is a bit more complex than I needed for short notice, but I am continuing to work through the book now that I have more time. If you only have a few days, then just work on a basic vocabulary. If you have a month or more to prepare, this is the book.

Some balance
I've just begun learning, and I will be able to give this a more qualified review once in Malawi and using the book as a textbook. However, it seems well structured and provides insight. I'm reviewing it now so I can assure the potential buyer that this is NOT an audiobook but an e-book. Therefore, accent is certainly not an issue and the previous review can be safely ignored.

very good, but audio and a glossary would help
A very good effort for this rather obscure language that has few materials. It would have been good to have audio files and a glossary at the end.

I purchased this book to help me with a unit I am teaching in school. We are reading Shana Burgs "Laugh With the Moon" and she has Chichewan words in the book. I wanted to expand on that and teach my students more and the correct pronunciation. I am very pleased with this book.

For the eye, but not for the ear
This is a helpful grammatical analysis, but as an audio-book it is a disappointment and disaster. The American voice makes a mockery of the language, and has no clue of the correct pronunciation. I am looking forward to the next edition with a real Chichewa voice, so that I can recommend it.

Zikomo kwambiri!
My wife and I have begun going through Nate Maxon's Chichewa for English Speakers. After two trips to Malawi, we both have wanted to pick up Chichewa so that we could better understand our new friends in Lilongwe. My wife is further along in the grammar than I am, but so far she has put the grammar to good use and has been able to explain things to me well using what she has read. We have both already learned a great deal.I have some experience working with learning languages (Russian in high school, Koine Greek and Classical Hebrew in seminary), and so far, I've found Maxon's grammar to be well laid out and helpful to gain an overview of how the language works. Maxon also provides resources online to supplement his grammar ([...]As we move through the grammar, I hope to update the review. So far we are pleased!"Zikomo kwambiri!" to the author, for providing an excellent affordable resource for learning Chichewa.

Best available for actually learning the language rather than just phrases
Not many books on chichewa at the moment. Chichewa 101 and another which are both phrases books. Phrases books are fine for a holiday, but these books will not help you learn the language. This is because chichewa is structured very differently to English. A single verb word is structured as pronoun-tense-verb e.g. adzatimva ife = a(he)-dza(future)-(ti) us-mva(to hear). He will hear us. Different classes of nouns also alter the verb to get agreement. This is the only book i know which tells you this and is the only book on amazon which is actually for learning chichewa. Thus, buy it if you need more than a simple phrasebook and you want to be able to construct your own sentances. Beyond this, it is nicely written and well structured. It is not an exercise book but really a very well explained grammar text with good, clear and repeated examples. I love it.-edit- Now I have bought the kindle version too. Now after 12 months with this book I can say it is truly superb. I wouldn't have been able to learn Chichewa without it. If you want to learn the language, buy it.

Really helpful
I've found this a helpful reference guide for learning Chichewa, with lots of good example phrases, and clear grammar explanations. Just one complaint: lack of navigation in the Kindle version. This is a real pity since it would only take a short time to rectify it. I've been reduced to creating bookmarks for every chapter to be able to jump around reasonably quickly, if clumsily. I'd have given it 5 stars had the navigation been in place.

Needs better navigation
Just starting to look at this resource, but disappointed by the lack of navigation in the Kindle edition. As a Chichewa speaker I would like to use this book for reference rather than consecutive study, however it is impossible to jump to desired sections in the absence of a clickable table of contents etc.Otherwise, looks promising, and the navigation issue should be easily resolved.
