The World Needs More Active Listeners!
Heather Younger did not disappoint in delivering practical and meaningful knowledge found throughout her latest book - The Art of Active Listening. As I read her book, I found myself reflecting on past conversations and situations in the workplace which I would have handled very differently if I had this book as a resource. The way in which Heather uses a combination of storytelling, real world examples and immediately applicable tools to help readers unlearn and reframe listening habits resonates with me. Often we find ourselves responding to negative stimuli simply to respond/defend without truly assessing what is being said to understand. In this busy digital world in which we live in today of constant emails, Slack messages, text messages, Zoom calls and more chats, our conversations are becoming more transactional (not a good thing). The Cycle of Active Listening Model is a perfect framework to help reshape our approach to listening to deepen our relationships and human connections in and out of the workplace. By using the strategies shared in this book this will help readers stop speaking past each other and start listening to understand, build more meaningful relationship and truly create a culture of active listening. The Art of Active Listening is a must have resource for individual contributors, leaders and anyone who wants to listen more effectively. Get your copy today!

How do you show up as a leader? Are you listening?
I heard Heather Younger speak once with Stephen M. Covey on the art of listening. Her approach to a basic sensory skill was exquisitely simple and yet astronomically powerful.Reading the Art of Active Listening solidified what I already think of Heather Younger. She is someone who has mastered - by daily practicing and feedback - an art of listening that makes people feel seen, heard, and of value.Based on a cycle of steps, Heather gives you the why, how and actual experiences on each... and also how they build upon one another. You cannot miss one step and have the same results. They all work in flow. One leads to another - when done right, and becomes a continual process one that builds trust and belonging.Heather sums it up perfectly. "Active listening is the doorway to increased belonging, loyalty, profitability, innovation, and so much more. It is the difference between thinking we understand what people want and knowing what they want."

Maybe the most important skill
We all know we need to be better listeners. We don't remember names 10 seconds after meeting someone, we miss all the unsaid cues that really tell us what is going on, and our minds race to figure out how to respond without fully grasping what is being said. The bad news is that nearly all of us admit to needing to get better. The good news is Heather Younger has the playbook here. Her 5-step model takes you through the process each time and builds active-listening habits. As the book says, "Until we commit to becoming more effective at listening to others, we'll continue to erode our relationships and miss opportunities to build something greater, together." This book is helping me get started towards better listening. Great for leaders and anyone looking to build better working relationships.
