King of the Golden City is an allegory written in the early 1920’s, and adapted and re-published in recent years. The purpose of the book is to help children to understand more clearly their relationship with Jesus, and more importantly the incredible opportunity they have to meet him each week in the Holy Eucharist.I love this book, and recommend it for children and adults alike. The extra notes are worth looking at. Lots to meditate on here.Respectfully,Jennifer Sharpe, author of The Mass Book for Catholic Children

Excellent Catechism...
For children AND adults alike. We are reading it as a family for the second time, it is a great allegory of our journey with God to the Promised Land. It is faithful to Catholic teaching throughout although I see only a few chapters that may bother our Protestant brethren. The comprehension and activities at the end are helpful and I can't recommend it highly enough.

wonderful
this is an excellent book for anyone especially those preparing for first communion. My 8 and 10 y/o enjoyed it and I really feel that they learned some things from it. I liked how there were activities directed at different levels and we could chose our involvement. This time around we read it allowed and discussed the symbolism of the different characters, objects, ect. I can see us going through the book again and getting even more out of it.

Recommend a rewrite of components of this story
While I understand the story the authors were trying to tell, in this day and age of sexual abuse, this book needs to be more thoughtfully and carefully written so as not to create even more susceptibility by children to sexual predators. Having the king visit the girl, alone, behind closed doors, and having their interactions remaining “their secret” is potentially grooming children for sexual abuse. Frankly, it’s strangely written and I’m very concerned why the authors would choose such a scenario and language. This could be a beautiful analogical story to tell, but as it’s written, I find it odd and dangerous for children.

Beautiful allegory of the Christian life.
Allegorically explains the Sacraments and the Christian life; especially Confession, Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Very good book
When the books says its an allegory for children it means it. My family enjoyed reading the book then finding out all the connections to each chapter. It was definitely an ice breaker that allow us to dive into further discussions about our faith.

Excellent aid in preparation for First Holy Communion and Penance
My children all loved this book, all eight of them. It is a wonderful allegory that helps children to understand Jesus' love for us and the importance of the Sacraments. It is a very enjoyable as a read aloud.

If I only had one book to help me help a child prepare for First Holy Communion, it would be this book. However, it is just as helpful and gripping as a basis for adult meditation. One to share with the whole family.
