Great 80-min documentary about The Clash
Don Letts directs a excellent documentary about the history of the Clash, all of whom are very articulate and interesting. Loads of their great music, interviews and live clips. Note that the documentary only goes up to 1983, so doesn't cover the last Clash album (1985).Note too that you only get the 80-minute Director's Cut version of this doc. on the disc, not the original 60-min version, but 80 mins is definitely better than 60!Bonuses include a great 20-min. featurette on their 1982 American tour.

Westway to the World
Great documentary if you're a Clash fan. And even if you're only more generally into late 1970s pop cultural history there is plenty here to keep you going. Documentaries on punk can't be easy to put together, since all you have as base material is a lot of disparate bits of footage but Don Letts - perhaps aided by his being a friend and contemporary of the band - does a sterling job.RIP Joe.

I am a Clash fan and saw them in 1984, but I wasn't really drawn to this rock-doc and it has sat on my shelves for many months. When I finally got around to watching it I was thoroughly absorbed and learnt some interesting nuggets about the dynamics and recording history of the band. At first I kinda felt guilty, that I should have known this stuff about a band I liked so much to have tattoos of some of their motifs. But, we all go through the wilderness years and some of us are (un)lucky enough to find our way back to our youthful passions. The band talk frankly about their influences, addictions and directions and their enthusiasm is infectious. The triple album Sandanista was the result of setting up a "Spliffbunker" in the studio where tunes were written and tried out and then taken to be recorded directly. Rather than cut the material as many have suggested the band were trapped in a 10 record contract...The Clash on Broadway shows how New York opened their eyes to emerging Rap / graffitti influences and they talk about their tenure at Bonds club for more than a fortnight. The guys appear as straight-forward grafters and Topper admits his addiction brought stress; Mick admits that he acted like a prima donna for a while. But, no regrets - it couldn't have been any other way.

The Clash - Westway to The World
Superb DVD which tells the story of the band from their inception to their final demise. Each band member has plenty of opportunity to explore their memories with pride, warmth + regret. The extras of which there are many includes some stunning live footage which should go some way in protraying how tremendous they were live

A must have for any Clash fan.
Unfortunately, having read the excellent Johnny Green book (A Riot of Our Own) a few years back, it's all to obvious that the great Clash film footage of their live performances from the Rude Boy film is over dubbed. So although there's lots of great video, the sound is just not up to scratch. This video relies very heavily on that footage. However, for any Clash fan, the interviews with the band make the video a must have, especially as Joe is no longer with us.

Great live performances and interviews
this is a truly great documentary about the Clash. Chock full of concert footage (including what i suspect is pretty rare early recording footage) and some good interview pieces. It also had good flow to it so it was pretty easy to watch. Any fan of the Clash or early days punk should own this.

awesome DVD about The Clash
In WESTWAY TO THE WORLD director Don Letts takes footage of old Clash shows and works them around interview footage with the band members. The result is a riveting documentary, sure to please Clash fans, both casual and diehard. From their origins in mid-1970's England to their worldwide fame and breakup, it's all here.Even the backing music, during the interviews, is music by The Clash. "Guns of Brixton," "Bankrobber," and other songs play behind Joe Strummer's resonant baritone as he describes the band's trials and tribulations, war stories and the stories behind the songs, and these songs sound great. Chapters describe landmark Clash shows, from dingy clubs in their early days to Shea Stadium in NYC during the height of the popularity.Interviews with Joe Strummer yield amazing lines, which seem to put everything about music and life in perspective. Topper Headon seems to nearly cry as he recalls his addiction and exit from the group. Strummer's recall of an encounter with Paul Simonon (bass) and Mick Jones (guitar and vocals) in which he thought he might have to punch Mick then "leg it"? HILARIOUS. Why didn't he punch the beefier Simonon? Paul looked quite "tasty," said Joe, and we know that Strummer didn't fancy a fight with him. I laughed so hard I almost choked on my soup. The concert footage on this DVD will make you want to sing, and the interviews will make you want to laugh and cry.The Clash was such a great band. This DVD is for everybody who ever thought so.Joe Strummer, Rest in Peace.Ken32
