The trouble I find with most mortar & pestles is that the bit that does the grinding (pestle?) is difficult to hold and hurts the palm of my hand. But this one has a rubber knobble on the end which is easy to hold, no pain anywhere. Furthermore, the grinding head fits snugly into the mortar; I'm told that the correct technique is just to roll the pestle round a bit using the flat palm of your hand and the job is done, but I tend to grip it (very comfortable) and put some weight on it.This is without doubt the easiest mortar & pestle I have ever used, and I would never consider using another ever again. Brilliant! 6 stars.

This pestle and mortar set is nice to look at and indeed, you can use a rotating motion to grind spices but with whole peppercorns you still need to put your weight behind it. Having said that, the pestle handle doesn't leave you with a sore palm. Not too light or heavy so I would recommend.

I've only been able to give this one star because the pestle broke the first time I used it. I was crushing a few Star Anise, and yes they were dry and hard. I heard a crack and thought it was the star anise so I carried on, and then became aware movement had changed and a piece of the pestle at the bottom had broken right off. I was really surprised that the pestle was hollow. Perhaps I had a faulty one (especially given the other reviews) but for me this was the most expensive grind ever.

This is advertised as dishwasher proof but you wouldn't want to put it in the dishwasher. The mortar base is hollow so whichever way up you put it, it comes out of the dishwasher full of water and the underside is hard to dry. Then the mortar doesn't have rubber feet so you need to put it on a non slip surface. The pestle is easy to grip but so far it doesn't seem any easier to use or more efficient than a decent conventional design. I find that the best kit to use is my little electric spice grinder - it is quick, can grind large quantities and is easy to clean out - just wipe the stainless steel bowl out with a damp cloth and rise the lid. And it cost less than this pestle and mortar!
