Everyday Dress of Rural America, 1783-1800: With Instructions and Patterns (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

Interesting, if slight, and sufficient to allow you to create these garments
An interesting, if slight, book. There are plentiful drawings, and patterns as well. The patterns are small diagrams the size of the book's pages, not life-size like modern patterns. It seems that these people preferred to construct their garments from rectangles, and most of the rectangles were the full width of the fabric, which was about 30". I would guess that the result, if you make any of these items, will have an authentic made-at-home-by-an-amateur look. Some of it is a bit surprising. For example, did you know that the (white) men of that time did not wear undershorts? Instead, their shirts were extremely long, and did double duty as undershorts. Hmm.The book also includes much briefer discussions of the clothing of the Indians with whom the settlers would have been in contact. Thus the chapter on men's pants includes a discussion of the loincloth.

Title is a little misleading
A good book but the title is a bit misleading. A better title is "Rural 1790 Vermont Clothing to Celebrate the State's Bicentennial"As long as you realize that the book focuses specifically on rural Vermont clothing then you may like it.Some additional information on clothing worn by native Abenaki Indians was included. That information seems to be a bit of an afterthought and the author admits that it isn't enough detail.Overall, it's an okay book written at a very basic level but still of some use but the information doesn't match the title and you won't find clothing for all of rural America during that period.

Good resource, but missing a huge chunk
I really like the way that this book is laid out. It has a very basic overview with sample patterns. The one big disappointment is that there is no pattern for the outer gown worn by women. There is a discussion of such, but the author refers you to other sources saying "...bearing in mind that these sources show English and French rather than American examples." I purchased this book specifically for American examples, so this was a surprise. Otherwise, I do really like the book.

Good resource
The book offers some history, practical info and helps and basic information on 18th century dress. It isn't the best book on the subject that I've seen but a very good one to have.

Everyday dress
This book was not what I expected. it had basic drawings of a few garments from colonial america and showed some native american garments. I wish it had more in it. It was very short and I expected it to have more pictures of the clothing in it.
