Delightful treat of a read
Funny. Satirical. Impressively current in terms of human responses political, cultural and personal. Fascinating view of Florida in mid 1800’s. Jules Verne is a marvelous writer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Even if the calculations are wrong, and some explanations lacking, this is a fun book
I don't know enough physics to judge the calculations in the book. And I was waiting to see how Verne would explain how they bored the canon. He didn't. That said, I just let my imagination go and the story unfolded in a highly entertaining way. I really enjoyed this book, which is much less famous than Around the World in 80 Days, but well worth the read, especially to any Jules Verne fan. Bantam Classics edition seems to be a good translation.

Great Book
I don't typically like to read a look of books, but this was one book was absolutely awesome to read and one I will probably read again in a few years. Definitely a great read.

The idea of this novel is quite visionary, but the execution...meh
“I asked myself whether supposing sufficient apparatus could be obtained constructed upon the conditions of ascertained resistance, it might not be possible to project a shot up to the moon?”In Jules Verne’s classic novel From Earth to the Moon, a gun club has started and its president has arranged a quite epic meeting to announce the design and plans to try to build a cannon to send a team of men to the moon. As word gets out about this, there is a definite buzz in the air across the globe.I think this is a case where the book’s strength is also its biggest weakness. The scientific approach of getting to moon is explored, and the novel is filled to the brim with mathematic calculations and probabilities that are quite, well, out of this world (and well out of control). I applaud Verne’s ability to be so cerebral and scientific, and his novel in this sense is very visionary and ahead of its time. In the same manner, though, the science part (which I am usually a big fan of in science fiction) seemingly takes over and dominates the novel ad nauseum. The many technicalities and figures tend to replace any semblance of tension or drama that the novel could have possibly had. It makes for a very dry reading experience. It could have been remedied had the characterization or writing style been effective. However, the characters are more caricature, the dialogue being quite silly, and the writing style borders on lampoon or farce, which is an odd mix with science fiction (although, truth be told, this could have been possibly a translation issue).Still, despite my complaints, I really loved the actual IDEA of this book. On paper (quite literally), this is a great idea for a novel and plot. The thought of putting together a plan to send men to the moon. Imagine that. However, this is one of those books where the idea and premise is fantastic, but the delivery is not so fantastic.Although I’ve heard of many of Jules Verne’s novels, this was my actual first reading experience, and I’ve heard it is one of his lesser novels. I still would like to try another one of these days.

Good adventure book.
Fun to read. It tells the story of the Baltimore Gun Club, a post-American Civil War society of weapons enthusiasts, and their attempts to build an enormous Columbia space gun and launch three people—the Gun Club's president, his Philadelphia armor-making rival, and a French poet—in a projectile with the goal of a Moon landing.

Used as a prize for my students to get from the Earth to the moon by reading 100,000 words. They are all excited to get there and win the book!

great book
One of my favorite books. Jules Verne knew about things that were over 150 years ahead of his time, leading the reader to wonder if Jules coujld have been a time traveller. He describes many things he could not possibly hav e known about
