Superb portrait of the experience of ageing
Marvellous! Howard Jacobson should by now be a designated national treasure, as one of our finest living writers. In an age when the bookstores are overwhelmingly filled with banal tosh posing as "feminist rewriting" of this, that or the other, Jacobson is to be congratulated here for taking on a subject not many writers would dare to attempt, and yet which faces us all sooner or later - the experience of ageing. He does so with enormous compassion and humour. The characters are wonderful, and the writing and dialogue superb. The book deserved to win a second Booker prize for Jacobson, but that it wasn't even shortlisted should come as no surprise to anyone. If you want to know what it means to be human as you approach the end of life then read this and marvel.

Love this author!
Howard Jacobson is one of my favorite authors. His writing style makes you really think about what story he's telling. I have read a lot of his books and am never disappointed.

Howard Jacobson's best.
All his books are good and some of them are really great. This one is his very best. May he live long, be well, and keep on writing.

witty and well written
Howard has a wonderful sense of humour and is very clever with words. I found this lighter, and easier to read than much of his work. Very enjoyable. My book club friends enjoyed it too. Lively discussion about it.
