Very honest read about a very determined woman
It's an excellent book but a challenge to read - it's translated from French which was written quite a long time ago. However, it is worth the challenge. She had such an interesting life not without its extraordinarily hard times and highlights.I actually borrowed this book from the library several years ago, never got to finishing it but loved it so much I finally bought my own copy. The book (used) arrived in excellent condition and I'm looking forward to reading it again.

Very confusing
Its a very rambled dialogue that greets you in this book. You can tell it has been translated from the french original. Not exactly what I was expecting or wanting.

Terribly disappointing
I had wanted to buy the author's other (beautifully illustrated) book on Chanel - The World of Coco Chanel; Friends, Fashion, Fame - which wasn't available when I wanted to read something on Chanel after seeing the film (which I felt was a missed opportunity). I thought this was perhaps a paperback edition, and therefore felt very let down before I even started to read it at the meagre and uninspired picture selection. It really is astonishingly mean-spirited of the publishers. I agree absolutely with the other reviewers and am finding the author's overwritten style to be utterly exhausting, especially when combined with the sheer amount of supposition (particularly about Chanel's ancestors, about whom it is very hard to care, especially for fifty pages). It is difficult to believe there has been any editing here, especially by the author, but I have sympathy for her editor, because if you cut out the rambling, repetition and supposition, you would have very little left. I also feel cheated by the declaration that this is all fiction... I really am not sure I will ever finish it (and I hate not to finish a book).

Tedious Read
I totally agree with all the other reviewer this book is very hard to read, the author has a very smug, superiour tone, as he seems to suppose all what Chanel was thinking and judges her on his own thoughts. It is factually written, full of boring, useless rambelling information. There are no pictures of the dresses or creations it describes. I am struggling to finish it. You can tell it is written by a man, no story telling or romance in the words. Would describe it as being written by a 'Risk Control Auditor' and about as enchancing as a manufacturing annual report.

Dreadfully written and translated.
I have more or less had to give up on this book also due to the dreadful writing, translation and an obvious lack of editing. It needs a re-haul, it is so poorly written and translated that it has become incomprehensible !!I am a native English speaker but with fluent French which has helped me to get to the second half of the book, but if you are native English speaker with no French - it will be hopeless.Don't spend your money on this one. What a disappointment!Curious to hear if anyone has read it in it's original French ?
