You'd want to use a BMS with low temp protection with a sensor right up next to the battery itself. This could be supplying power to multiple battery packs via a bus bar that have different temps.

Q: Will it work with batteries only?

If the solar inverter is only connected to the battery, it is only with the inverter function. If you need to charge the battery, you still need to connect the solar panel or AC power. Or you can charge the battery with another charger.
