Why France is disunited
Excellent insight into the french character and why the republic struggles to unite people.

Interesting but rather dense
I am struggling with this as the early chapters did not grab my attention. It gets better when it reaches the 16th C. I liked his other books about France but this is more difficult to get into

So much information, thoroughly enjoyable read.

Moral relativity
Robb’s usual entertaining, oblique approach to history and place. However I found his twenty-first century judgements on centuries’-old morals tiresome and intrusive.

Very personal view of France from some unusual perspectives.
Shows “the whole” by focusing on selected details and events. Very interesting with some details of French history that are unlikely to be found elsewhere.Written by a Francophile Scotsman

Something missing which ruins the book
Having met Graham Robb and read several of his books, I was VERY DISAPPOINTED to find that this edition, bought by my wife as a gift for my birthday in August has NO MAPS OR DIAGRAMS included. Sadly I am unable to return it as the return date had passedd before my birthday

A total Bore
I got neither the history nor the adventure, so I had to give up about halfway.Regret I bought the book.

History plus
There is an awful lot of information in this book. I am still in mid-read. I prefer to read a chunk then absorb it. I can then savour the book slowly as I know I will be disappointed when it ends. It not a straight forward history book. It almost has the feel of historical fiction but also includes the author's travels to the places describing them as they are now. A brilliant blend. This is an honest review of a complementary ARC.

Improve your knowledge of French culture and history over the centuries.
Graham Robb has written many history books concerning French history and culture. All of these have been lauded with high critical acclaim, and this one is no exception. So read it.

Libro interessante a prezzo giusto e spedizione gratis
Libro di lettura abbastanza facile di soggetto presentato in modo originale, cioè saltando di località e periodi diversi.

Very entertaining and informative
No, this is not a complete history of France. It is an "adventure" history, as Graham Robb titles it. He is a terrific writer who chooses happenings from Julius Caesa, Napoleon, the French Revolution and the French Resistance in World War 11. He has dipped into the amazing history of France and found many jewels. And he is such an entertaining writer that you come away having learned a lot in the most pleasurable way.
