The Rookie has jumped the shark - and is now an exercise in liberal wish fulfilment
You have to really work hard to make me dislike a Nathan Fillion vehicle. I loved Firefly, Serenity and Castle. And the first season or two had as great gritty edge as it is possible to have on a network TV show, which made it refreshing. It wasn't The Shield but the first couple of seasons were pretty good. In addition, most of the acting is better than average. I also like the fact that Fillion as a producer clearly supports people he worked with (with the glaring exception of Stana Katic), as lots of cast members in his previous shows appear in the Rookie. It's nice that a star looks after the people he worked with and gives them employment opportunities. But this has turned into MASH. Just as when MASH turned from a gritty and cynical battlefield hospital drama into an exercise involving Alan Alda petting various Korean refugee children for 1/2 hour, the Rookie season 4 spends pretty much every episode being an excuse to lecture the public on how "The system" is a fixed deck (in-between spewing misandrist guff) - but only women and POC are affected by this "rigged" system. No mention of the fact that females spend less that 1/2 of their time in prison as their male counterparts for the same offences, males serve a greater proportion of their sentence in custody – 53 per cent compared to 48 per cent for females, or the fact that women have 50% more chance than men of being released from prison early on home detention curfew. And of course, the Police characters in the show nod along with every liberal utterance like bobble heads. They must know different cops than the US police officers I know. The only exception to this "Hug a hoodie" rubbish are the cartoonish "Right" villains who are of course biblically dumb until they are shot dead with all the difficulty of a Canadian seal cull - they shoehorn this particular liberal wish fulfilment into two of the episodes of this season. And the plotlines - You have street officers carrying out detective and SWAT work, you have the obligatory CIA black helicopters plot, and of course my favourite when a former SAS man gets taken down by a taser without firing a shot. And not one issue of real-world events outside of the Trump villains has permeated the show - BLM ANTIFA riots etc, defunded police, demoralised cops quitting across America in droves, DA's kicking criminals back out onto the streets, looting and robbery going unpunished by a justice system cowed by ideology. You also have "Comedy" relief coming in now - such as the spectacularly annoying Pete Davidson. The series started out gritty, such as when the Tim Bradford character had to deal with his ex-wife who was hooked on narcotics during her undercover work, now we have the equivalent of Beavis and Butthead turning up. The season has in plot terms jumped the shark.Oh and another example of the script hearing zero relation to the actual real world - in one episode the incredibly sanctimonious Shawn Ashmore character states during a discussion with a California DA that they get elected by being tough on crime - because if California is famous for one thing, it's a low tolerance conservative approach to crime and punishment and only electing tough on crime DA's.

Not as good as the earlier seasons
Missing the police action. Too much talking and moralising. Such a pity as really enjoyed the earlier episodes.
