Q: Can you use normal bags for waste once the rolls run out? Any comments on leaks or trapped clumping litter, general comments?

Only if similar in size and drawstring tie

Q: Will this still work properly on carpet?

The base is sturdy and the drum rotated on top of the base without any floor contact. Carpet, tile, laminate etc should all be fine

Q: What kind of litter does it need? Can I use pellet litter?

I use clumping litter as it masks the odour very well. In the description (user manual too) it says you can use any litter

Q: Would this fit a big mainecoon ?

It might be a tight fit but as i have just scrapped mine because it did not work. I might be the wrong person to answer - buy a decent tray instead, less cost and much less hassle.
