Assyrian Cookbook Paperback – May 1, 2013

Love this book ! I am a woman of color and I am in an interracial relationship with my boyfriend who is Assyrian. We have been together for 4 years now and I love everything about his culture , the Assyrian language & his most of all his family who has accepted us and loved me with open arms. I especially love his mothers cooking of her traditional Assyrian meals ! I wanted to learn on my own so I could attempt making some (nothing will ever top his moms food of course )& I went searching for a cookbook and came across this book ! Surprisingly there aren’t many Assyrian cookbooks so this was definitely a life saver ! it’s perfect , I showed my boyfriends mother and she was so surprised that there was a cookbook of traditional Assyrian meals , she read through the whole book and loved that everything was similar to how she would make it with only some slight changes in her personal cooking style of the meal. She even wanted to order one for my boyfriends sister ! I made a few dishes and my boyfriend loved them , thank you so much Beatrice for sharing your meals ❤️

In the interest of disclosure, I feel that I need to say that I have known one of Mrs Youil's daughters for about 15 years. Having a copy of this book now ends about 14 years, 11 months and 20 days of nagging for copies of these recipes; which started after I had tasted some of these (as prepared by her daughter).I feel that I should also make it clear that I am a collector of cookbooks, and recipes. One of my favourite pastimes is reading cookbooks. I have found this to be a very straight forward, and easy to follow for any novice cooks out there. I have been able to cook the Boosleh Gilya (red onion sauce) and the Mahshe Smooka (red kidney bean soup) straight from my cupboard, without having to rush out for any exoitc ingredients.As a diabetic , the majority of the recipes meet my need for balanced GI friendly food, and the desert section (Halva anyone?) will serve for my occasional treats. I can also see this being a practical choice for anyone wanting to feed their family.Thank you to Mrs Youil and her family for taking the time to write, and get this book published. It will now reside with, and be a valuable addition to my "daily" cookbooks; you know - the ones that we all have with the stained pages from where you have dripped on them, and that naturally fall open to certain well loved pages? The tough choice is deciding which pages will be the most loved...

I looooove this cookbook so much! I was so pleased and surprised to see an authentic Assyrian cookbook being sold on Amazon and was even more happy realizing Beatrice is also an Iranian Assyrian and that the book includes not only Assyrian recipes but Iranian ones as well!! Im very excited to recreate the foods I grew up eating myself and am so pleased with my purchase.
