Transforming a Rape Culture

Different viewpoints, same issue.
As someone who has read a lot about the psychological burden of sexual victimization and not enough about prevention efforts, this book was a breath of fresh air. I don't wish to enter the debate about whether or not this book is "militant feminism" as some reviewers would, but I do wish to say that it is nice to read people's ideas about ways to try to prevent such an awful crime. A lot has been said about just how terrible it is and how many women and men are affected, but not enough has been said concerning ways to stop it. Whether or not you agree with their ideas about how to go about prevention, I appreciate this collection of essays as a step in the right direction simply for the fact that they are *trying* to find ways we can prevent further victimization.

Good informative read
Good read. Very informative information for all women and men. I only gave it 4 stars because there were some essays in the book that felt really anti-male. The majority of the book was not "man-hating" though, and very interesting. Highly recommended for anyone who has a focus on victimology, crisis work, or women's studies. It brings some really good points to the surface and makes you think long after you have put the book down.

Amazing!
So insightful! This book is heartbreaking, but really taps into the reasons and motivations, however gruesome, that people rape other people.

amazing
This book should be required for everyone to read, male or female. It will completely change the way you think about feminine sexuality. I cannot believe the concept of a "rape culture" is not discussed more often at universities.

a must read
read this a bit on a whim and ended up pulled in to an understanding that changed my fundamental views. I can not recommend enough. I intend on purchasing several more to give to close family and friends.

Academic concepts explained
Wanna coin some hip new academic buzzword? Here's a brief rundown.Step 1. Think up an idea so stupid and emotionally charged it can't be addressed logically.Step 2: Give it a really sensationalist, catchy name that makes people outraged! Like MURDER HEGEMONY! Are you outraged yet? My blood is boiling, I want to smash murder hegemony already! (Nevermind the fact sexual crimes are seen as worse than murder in the west.)Step 3: Let it bounce around off some inflated egos for a while like a hot potato as they refine how definitionless it needs to be.Step 4. When it's cool enough, squash it into an ideological filter through which all information is passed, almost like a religious doctrine.Step 5. Keep your logic circular, baby! Let's say you coined a sociological concept called "the saladarchy"; all the world's ills can and must be linked to the saladarchy. If any information contradicts the saladarchy, then it was spun and contrived by bigots who don't believe in the saladarchy, much like how Lucifer put dinosaur bones on earth to fool us into straying from biblical literalism! Yay!So next season when rape culture and white privilege go out of fashion (ok, when rape culture goes out of fashion), get on in there and create your own outrage du jour! Be the lord of your own self-fulfilling prophecy of victimization!
