Aristocrats [DVD]

Good
This quite lengthy account of the Lennox sisters in the 18th century is quite absorbing, thanks to a good cast and a fluid script. Geraldine Somerville is outstanding as the leading figure among the sisters, who holds it all together; and Julian Fellowes is suitably pompous as their father. Alun Armstrong also makes a good Fox. The filming was done in Ireland and on this occasion this is not incongruous as much of the story is set there, and some convincing Georgian buildings are provided for scenes in England. The last episode is very different from the rest due to the long time span of the story, it is mostly taken up with the 1798 rebellion. The actresses who play the sisters when older in this episode are not always convincing substitutes for the younger ones, in demeanour or character. But overall, this is well worth watching

Confusing packaging, but the DVD plays in English
Delivered in good time. Was disappointed at first when I opened the package from the seller, and saw only Nordic writing, and on the blurb inside. I tried the DVD in my player, but only saw options for four languages, none of which was English. After writing to the seller, he assured me that the DVD is actually in English, with Nordic language subtitles, as it is an import. This proved to be true, and I finally figured out how to remove the subtitles altogether from the screen (Click on Subtitles menu, and follow the next menu down to 'No Subtitles'. After which it was fine!Good communication with the seller.

Aristocrats
I thoroughly enjoyed this series, but confess that I did on occasion literally lose the plot as the storyline years rolled on. This was due to the changes to actors/actresses in the latter episodes, and I found myself having to think hard to get continuity. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable costume romp, with a fine cast performing with aplomb.

Didn’t disappoint!
I ordered this as hadn’t seen it since it was on tv! I loved it then and didn’t disappoint when I watched it recently on dvd. An amazing series, with sumptuous costumes, beautiful stately homes and a great storyline. Wonderful performances

Great dvd
Would definitely recommend to people interested in 18th century history. The dvd explains the life of the four Lennox sisters, although it mainly focuses on Emily and Sarah. I would advise people to buy the book as they talk about the four sisters in great detail. What is even better is Emily's house, Carton House, is now a hotel so you can stay there, and Louisa's house, Castletown House, is now a tourist attraction. Both are located in Co Kildare, Ireland. After reading the book or watching the dvd it is a nice idea to visit where these great ladies lived.

Good Historical Drama
I liked it. The acting is great and it's beautifully photographed. I watched it just after reading the book and visiting Castletown House so it was quite an experience. There's so much detail in the book that, for obvious reasons, can't be put in the screen version so I wonder if someone who hasn't read the book would find it as absorbing as I did.

Costumes and Settings extravaganza
a good carrier for superb costuming. The story line is somewhat lacking and by the final episode I skipped over some of it. However I still enjoyed the acting, beautiful costumes and settings. I'll be watching again for sure.
