Good but fishy
I didn’t know what to expect from this kit ( I’ve always known “rice cakes” to be those cardboardy circle things you eat with peanut butter) but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s somewhere between a soup and a sauce and it has a nice spice to it. The rice cakes are kind of pasta-like - lightly chewy and hold the coating of sauce nicely. It was quick and easy to make. I did remove a star because there’s fish in the sauce and I noticed a definite fishy taste. I never eat fish so I’m pretty sensitive to fishy tastes, but you might not notice. I just would have preferred a fish-free sauce. I’ll eat it once but probably won’t but again. Still a good product, I just wouldn’t buy it because of the fish.

Rice cakes were rotten in the package
I bought this package Tteokbokki in September, and although the packaging said it was best sometime in 2024, the rice cakes were rotten by the same December. I hadn't opened or touched the package since then. I just left it in my cupboard away from light and moisture.

Hot Spicy and Authentic
I figured this might be a little too hot for me so I only used one packet of the soup mix. After simmering on the stove, it’s still thickened up even with half of the recommended amount of the powder and soup mix.It was still pretty hot, so I think that if I had added both packets, it would’ve been searing. But it would’ve been authentic. Another thing that made me use only one packet was the predominant fish smell. I expected this because after all, it does contain anchovy, but once again, a little bit much for me personally. I think most people who are wanting the authentic experience will appreciate the heat and the fishiness. The rice cakes were quite good. Very chewy and satisfying, but they did remind me a little bit of the similarly packaged gnocchi. I guess there’s nothing like fresh. So easy to make, and everything seemed to be excellent quality.

Not for you if you are used to home-made food from scratch.
I have to say right off the bat that I am not experienced with this type of food. This was my first time I tried a rice cake. The ingredients are not revealed in the advertisement, so when I saw the other side of the package, I was a bit disappointed. The list looks like an entire chemistry lab was poured in the bag. Note that this food has a pretty high sodium content. Apart from that, the food is well packaged with easy to follow instructions. It is very easy and quick to prepare, so you can make this in a hurry. The cake is chewy and without flavor; it takes flavor from the sauce and the bits of leek included in the package. The overall taste is hot and sweet, maybe with a hint of sour in the background. The prepared food looked and smelled good. It was interesting and I thought I liked it for a few bites and then I decided I couldn’t eat anymore. My daughter who is fond of Asian food filled her plate with anticipation but then left the whole thing on her plate after a couple of bites. My wife didn’t even touch it.It is a decent amount of food (2 pack with 3-4 servings each) for the price. Unfortunately, it didn’t do for our family. I really wanted to like it but I couldn’t.

Done in 10 minutes, tastes really good
This tteokbokki is really easy to make and tastes good. If you have fishcake at home, you could make this into a restaurant quality meal. This is coming from someone who is ethnically Korean. You basically put water, the sauce packets, and the veggie packets in a pan and bring to a boil. You wash the rice cakes under water and separate them (they come dry and stuck to each other), and put the rice cake into the boiling sauce mixture. You stir occasionally and it's done in 4-5 minutes, depending on how soft you prefer the rice cakes.A great way to eat this is with shredded cheese sprinkled on top. You could also mix in some instant noodles (minus the soup mix) and make rabbokki (ramyum plus tteokbokki). This is how a lot of Korean restaurants in Korea serve up tteokbokki. I put some green peas on top and it was fantastic.

Well-designed packaging; clear instructions
The Hayanhaessal Goodbookki, Tteokbokki, Sweet Spicy Authentic Korean Flavor Rice Cake is nice, but not what I expected. I thought the cakes would be something to pan-fry, but this is really a soup with little squishy rice "cakes" in it. The cakes are about 2" long and sort of finger-shaped, and quite gummy (they stuck in my teeth a bit). The best thing about this was the clear packaging and easy-to-follow directions (and it was really quick!) The soup base, dried vegetables, and rice cakes are clearly labeled, and the directions tell you to add 270 ml. water to the soup and vegetables and to cook for a few minutes. You can add other things if you want.I didn't really enjoy the texture of the cakes, but the flavor was nice and spicy. Spouse found it a little hot, so we added some corn to sweeten it a bit; it would also be nice with mushrooms, squash, or even something like peas. If you like mochi and other chewy Asian foods, you would probably enjoy this more than I did.
