good info!
Good info in readable format for middle schooler or high schooler who doesn't like reading. High readability. Used in a homeschool environment as part of American History curriculum extra reading about colonial times. It was a great choice!

History as a journey
Genevieve Foster has the unique ability to take the reader on a journey into the world of various people, but in this work it is William Penn. You will not only learn about William Penn and his Quakerism, but also how he got given to him what is now Pennsylvania. You will also learn about the rulers of Japan, China, as well Louis XIV and Versailles, Peter the Great of Russia and how he came to build St. Petersburg. Also featured is Queen Elizabeth and King James of the authorized King James version fame. I do not care what age you are, this is a good way to get the historical overview that you need of the late 15 and early 16 hundreds.

Wonderful history book
We enjoy the way this book gives glimpses into what was going on all over the world during this time in history. The writing is more like a story than a dull, dry rendering of historical facts. My children have enjoyed listening to me read this aloud. They are picking up facts from the "story" because they have brought up contrasts between what we read in this book and what we saw in our studies of earlier periods. I recommend this book to any history enthusiast or homeschooler.

Doesn't live up to other titles
I purchased this book because the World of Christopher Columbus was SO good, and this title wasn't available at our local library. As a homeschooling mom and big fan of William Penn and all that he stood for, I thought this would be a good addition to our home library. First of all, the size is smaller. Also the format is different, and there are typographical errors in the book. It does have good info, but definitely not what I was expecting from a Foster book.

Four Stars
Good, but not as detailed as other titles by Genevieve Foster, that I have previously loved.

excellent way to interest 10-year-old in history
In an easy-to-read style, author outlines the subject's history and, in what she terms "horizontal history", provides a most interesting outline of salient events during the subject's time period. This approach provides the reader, youthful or not, with an excellent persective of how historical events influenced the development of William Penn. Fast-moving, interesting text will help the youthful reader to develop an interest in historical subjects.

Helpful, easy-to-read style, Unusual approach as it give a broad-brush portrait of the late 17th Century across the world
Genevieve Foster has taken a look at 1650-1700 as a backdrop to the life story of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. This is a great resource if you want to learn about the life but mainly the times of William Penn. In a remarkable way this author develops a holistic history approach, trying to portray what was happen in the latter half of the 17th Century all across the known world. It is written in a short, 'story-telling' style, with drawn illustrations and portraits but furnishes the reader with a flavour of the times in a way that many standard textbooks or heavily worded biographies will not. Highly recommended for people who enjoy a light history read and I can almost guarantee that it will fill in some gaps in your knowledge (unless, of course, you are an expert in the time period).

Genevieve Foster fan!
Enjoy learning more about the quakers and First Nation peoples of North America. Very interesting. Nice layout and content, like all of Genevieve Fosterโs books.
