Information For UK Customers
There appears to be a lot of confusion caused by the reviews here. Not least due to Amazon UK (for reasons best known to themselves?) electing to include international reviews, in with UK reviews. For information purposes by the way, I am a (British trained) Industrial Chemist, with experience working in the UK, Canada, USA, Asia and New Zealand. On that basis, I will attempt to 'unravel' any confusion for UK customers...So some products sold as "Ichthammol" or under the brand name "Ichthyol" are manufactured in China. However confusingly, in China, these products contain almost no ichthammol at all, and are around 98% plant based products. This ointment/salve is almost the colour of petroleum jelly (aka Vaseline). If you are looking to buy what we in the west think of as a drawing salve or ointment (to draw boils and carbuncles to a head etc,) it contains at least 10%, or better still 20% GENUINE "Ichthammol". In effect, the chemical name for what you want is "Ammonium Bituminosulfonate". Unlike the products imported from China, this ointment is almost completely black in colour, and as its chemical name suggests, smells quite strongly of bitumen/tar/asphalt.In short then, if you are looking for ointment to draw boils to a head etc, please search for either "Ammonium Bituminosulfonate" or "Ammonium Bituminosulphonate" (slightly different UK/US spellings but same product) rather than "Ichthammol" or the brand name of "Ichthyol". I hope this helps other Amazon UK customers.PS - If the Amazon image(s) don't show or state the active ingredients, don't buy it. Simple as!
