MagToolAquarium in-Sump DC Protein Skimmer, with Controllable DC Pinwheel Pump for Up to 135-185Gal Reef Tank (N170 Plus)

I was using a bubble magus curve 7 on a red sea reefer 170 and the water level in my sump was not high enough for it to work properly so I started looking in Amazon for a replacement. Came across the Magtool R170 and I was impressed by the cost and good reviews so figured I'd take a chance. All I can say is I'm blown away at the performance of this skimmer all ready, I don't have to close the valve no where near closed to get it bubbling below the cup. The bubble magus was completely closed and the bubbles still wouldn't reach the cup. Another thing is to have a DC controllable pump at this price point is just mind boggling. I have pump turned all the way up and use the flow valve to control for wet or dry skin. It's also much quieter than the bubble magus. I will update in a few months if anything changes but if your on the fence about getting one I say GET IT !!

I saw this on Amazon and was very hesitant to try it because it wasn't a known brand. I was about to go crazy with a Red Sea 300 skimmer as it was overflowing and not skimming all the time.I received the skimmer and was immediately very impressed by the build quality. It's very well constructed with quality parts. The best part is the DC motor and the ability to adjust the flow.I was having to put spacers on the bottom of my sump to raise the Red Sea skimmer or it would overflow. With this skimmer, I was able to drop it in with no spacers and it works perfectly. I currently have the controller set on 4 and it's perfect.The air intake adjustment works so well and is very easy to dial in. It's super precise and only takes about a 1mm adjustment to make a difference.I would recommend this to anyone as I run a 100% Acropora tank and it has the very best of everything with no expense spared. This skimmer is better than some 1k skimmers I've tried. It also is almost an identical copy of a Bubble Magus by the way :).

So after my initial review of it being eh, I will have to sat amazing skimmer. It wasn't put together properly so I had to take it apart and redo it. The pump wasn't mounted properly but it's now how it should be and works amazingly well.

I've had several other protein skimmers in the past, top notch known brands, but wasn't happy with the performance and both needed constant adjustments. This skimmer came very well packaged, assembled, and arrived 24hr after placing the order. Overall the skimmer is very quiet, produces lots of bubbles, and after turning on and off several times, holds its adjustments. All components easily come apart for cleaning and if needed, the instructions show step by step how to reassemble the skimmer. The price is a huge selling point, but this skimmer has outperformed the other known skimmer brands currently on the market. I will be trying more MagTool accessories for my saltwater tank!

Was not familiar with this brand of protein skimmer. I installed it a few weeks ago and it is working like a charm. It got all the nasties out really well. We have a 75 gallon salt water tank and it seems to be a great fit for this size. Very pleased.

The media could not be loaded. Best protein skimmer for the price. I’ve been using it with no problems ever since last year. It’s very quit and powerful but the controller will allow you to reduce the skimate if needed. Over a good buy I totally recommend. Look at my reef tank and you can tell for yourself

Having 2 other large tanks with expensive skimmers, I can honestly say this model can certainly take it's rightful place among them.After 5 days, I get almost perfect skimmate, silent operation, easy setup and calibration, and it is equivalent in size to other "space saving" models. The added drain hose is perfect as I drain into a side container. My only wish would be for the silencer inlet to be 3/8" (10mm) to accept typically sized Ozone and Co2 scrubber lines.The pump controller has a 3-minute pause before the pump turns on. I'm not sure why, as it's not mentioned in the instructions. I can live with it for sure, but it would be nice to know why this pause is needed.Only time will tell if it has the lasting power of competitive models. But for now, Well done!

Have had one on my personal tank for a while and love it. Ordered a second one to install on a customers tank, and it no longer has a speed controller for the dc pump. Kind of disappointing. The instances in which I would turn it down are rare but still, they exist. Like dosing chemi-clean for example. So unfortunately back on the hunt for what skimmer I will recommend next time.
