Great compilation
I knew a few of their hits, certainly enough to make me buy this but I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of the compilation most of which was new to me, some really well written and well crafted songs, very catchy and have stood the test of time very well in my opinion

... run through of the career of one of the best and most influential bands of the 60s
This is a very comprehensive run through of the career of one of the best and most influential bands of the 60s, think of them as a 1960s version of Fleetwood Mac.This band started as the backing band for Barry MCGuire "Eve of Destruction" and went on to write such beautiful melodies as Monday Monday and California Dreaming. They continued with boppy songs and then Mama Cass split for a while to have her knock-out hit "Dream a little dream of me",This collection also includes the whimsical "Creque Alley" which lists all the bands that were trying to get up and going at that time around California, great for students of history and entertaining for nerds to run through the names and see where they fit.All of the above named songs are on this collection except for "Eve of Destruction" but Barry McGuire does get a mention in "Creque Alley"

The Best of The Mamas and The Papas
OK, I know this is a very old recording in a modern format but I bought it simply because my original cassette version was virtually worn out!In many respects the Mamas and Papas fall into a similar category as Buddy Holly - both only recorded for a short time but left a legacy behind them for which every true pop music lover should be truly glad. This is particularly true of Mama Cass who, despite a troubled life and an unfortunate death at an early age, left to the world her unique voice and a message of love. For those of us old enough to actually remember flower power and the era of love and peace this is a must have recording. For those who were not even born at the time, and even those who are teenagers today, this is a salutary lesson in music conveying the message of an era - and the tracks remain haunting today!

A dream to own this cd.
West coast, laid back anthems from hippy folk rockers:Call the Mamas and the Papas what you like, and shove them into any niche box you wish to; this four part harmony vocal/instrumental group from the '60's,shone briefly but produced some timeless classics of the era.California dreaming,Monday Monday, dedicated to one I love,Creque alley etc, still heard regularly on (some) radio stations today. Also included are 'Mama' Cass Elliot's best known songs; Dream a little dream of me,It's getting better and make your own kind of music.N.B.the latter has recently been a sizeable hit for Paloma Faith at time of review.Sad to think there is only Michelle Phillips who is still with us (on planet earth) ,from the Mamas and Papas. With this excellent and truly smashing collection, their legacy and spirit will live on for a very long time yet - I'm quite sure!
