A Far-Out Freakout Of A Film
This is my favorite music documentary I've ever seen. Directed (assembled?) by Brett Morgen, his intention was to create an immersive Bowie experience. So it's not a typical doc by any means. If you let it wash over you you'll enjoy yourself. Just know going in that it's non-linear and experimental - a trippy and fun aural and visual collage. All narration is by Bowie himself, taken from many interviews over the years. Sometimes we see him talking on screen, other times it is offscreen while we view montages from across his career. There's many excellent concert excerpts. Some of this is previously unseen footage and therefore a must for fans. It's also a good introduction for those unfamiliar with his work. I will add that one advantage of home viewing is you can turn on the closed captions. In the theater I missed quite a bit of what he said, due to his British accent and occasional music in the background. In an interview Morgen was asked if he had a favorite Bowie phase, and he said 1995 (the "Outside" album) to 1997 (the "Earthling" album). "Hallo Spaceboy" is from "Outside", and opens and closes the movie. I'm thinking that might be because the song touches on some classic Bowie themes. But more than that I believe Morgen was heavily influenced by the official video for the hit single version from back in the day. In it David was shown in quick edits singing, interspersed with footage of other cultural phenomena, and this documentary often follows that model. It's nice to see a bunch of Bowie's paintings, which are good and little-seen. Other than the well-known songs, I also liked tracks such as "Word On A Wing" and "Rock 'N' Roll With Me" being spotlighted.Goes well with the 2-CD soundtrack (the vinyl version will be released in 2023). Highly recommended.

Barebones Blu-Ray of Bowie's Moonage Daydream
Being a Bowie fan for the past 40 years, I've got to admit that this film is excellent. If you are expecting a documentary where some famous voice tells you the history of an artist - this is not for you. This film is narrated by Bowie himself from what's likely dozens of audio & video interviews he conducted over decades. All of it is edited together beautifully in an artistic way that you certainly believe Bowie would approve of himself. While the film may be a solid five star production from Brett Morgen (Crossfire Hurricane & Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck), this blu-ray release is truly disappointing due to a lack of ANY worthwhile bonus features. Given the financial backing of this film from both HBO & LiveNation, you would think they would understand that us Bowie fans and/or collectors of physical media have come to expect things like bonus footage, commentary tracks, music videos, live performances, etc..This blu-ray only contains a trailer and some close captioning in a few different languages. There's not even a paper insert within the case with a chapter listing or details about the production. If I were forced to guess the future, odds are good that this release may get picked up by Criterion or Arrow or another group to actually provide something a lot more valued by long-time fans of Bowie. One can only hope.

Psychedelic eye candy, good music & vintage footage, lacking in something...
Overall I enjoyed this new documentary about David Bowie. It was an interesting "omniscient" approach with Bowie providing the narration throughout culled from interviews and such. Concert footage is remarkable. There is perhaps an overabundance of the psychedelic eye candy visuals accompanying music which isn't always appropriate. I was curious why the filmmaker did NOT include anything in Bowie's life prior to 1972 (early life & recording career between 1965-1971)... it just starts BANG with Ziggy Stardust and moves forward, hitting the Diamond Dogs era, the Berlin era, the Serious Moonlight era, the Glass Spider era, the late 90s era, and finally Black Star. The point of the presentation seems to be that Bowie was a man who reinvented himself and became a "different" David Bowie with each phase of his career (we knew that already). So why not show the late 60s & Hunky Dory era which reveals a MAJOR transformation from that persona to Ziggy? But this is a minor quibble. If you love Bowie, you'll likely dig this movie. It looks and sounds GREAT on Blu-ray.

BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING, BOWIE.
This is a beautiful and accurate documentary of David. It gives you mostly David Bowie. There are very few glimpses of David Jones, in my opinion. David Jones was my favorite. I miss him, so very much.

Powerhouse telling of a revolutionary life
This film is like having a wonderful acid trip with Bowie and intermingling with his beautiful, expansive and brave soul! Getting to know this man whose very life was a work of art is inspiring. Bowie communicates a powerful, moving and (of course) musically diverse message about celebrating life in all of its fragmented, chaotic glory and living each day and loving yourself and those around you with your whole being. Bret Morgen has made a masterpiece worthy of Bowie.

For David Bowie fans!
This is a well put together documentary that brings you closer to Bowie and his music. If you are a fan of Bowie this is worthwhile. If you are looking for an in-depth up close interview type documentary this is not for you.

Innovative & Imaginative - Just like Bowie Himself.
Brett Morgen did a phenomenal job capturing David Bowie as an artist over time.At the very end of the film, Bowie says, "I put myself through everything." And you feel as though you did too. What else is there to say? It's innovative. Imaginative. And downright awesome.5 stars / 5 stars
