Great to have as part of a survival kit.
I wasn't sure how to use this at first but after watching some video's on Youtube, i figured it out and it works very well. You first need to use the toothed part of the steel striker, to grate off some of the magnesium bar, and make a small little pile of powder on whatever you want to light, being careful not to make it spark. Then when you have enough on your kindling material, you need to use the cut out part of the steel striker to make some sparks and it will ignite the small pile and start a small fire provided you have chosen a suitable kindling. It takes some practice but once you know how, you can get a fire going fairly easy. You would be able to start a lot of fires with this if you got the knack. Also the whistle is a hand addition as well. Great to have as part of a survival kit.

Great, sturdy, tool for all outdoor trips
Great piece of kit. Magnesium rod feels sturdy, grip is a good size and striker is strong and multi purpose. Very easy to use once you've got the hang of it! (Remember to scrape the rod first!)While requiring a fair bit of puff whistle is tri tone and effective.Only drawback to this procduct is that it doesn't come with any instructions so may take a while for first time users to get the hang of it. Other than that great small tool for all trips that'll last a long time.

Good sparks
This seems to work well with good sparks but there are no instructions included as to the best tinder to use to light a fire with! It did not work well with wood shavings.

Great product seems really well made
Great product seems really well made . most of the negative reviews on here are people complaining about the lack of instructions and the box being squashed which are just not real complaints. Only thing I'm not sure about as it it says on the box free tinder in handle not sure what this is referring to as I can see no way to open the handle. I was going to get a fire lighter from a nearby camping shop and seeing out it was over priced to 15 pounds seeing this at the very reasonable price of 5 pounds mate the sale. all round happy.

Great fire starter useless whistle
Bought this mainly for the fire starter (I already have a whistle) so overall am happy as it seems good quality but the whistle is a bad joke, only get a weak sound out of it, absolutely pointless and would expect more out of something from a Christmas cracker, 30 minutes after taking delivery of it and it's already in the bin. If you buy this product and need a whistle look elsewhere.

if I can work it anyone can
I am going to be honest here! the nearest I have ever come to survival techniques is camping-and that only on a site! However I have been bored lately and watching a lot of Ray Mears and survivor man and the first thing they always do is light a fire so I thought i would get one and try to see how difficult it is. I read the reviews and took them with a slight pinch of salt and placed my order anyway. It came as others have said with no instructions so obviously googled and watched. at first I couldn't even get a spark so thought maybe it was really rubbish but didn't cost much but had another go and I am not joking when I had rubbed all the black stuff off that I actually did get some sparks and after about a dozen goes managed to set fire (on purpose) to some cotton wool on a plate in the kitchen! ok so maybe not outdoors in the wind and rain but it worked and now i have got the hang of it I am confident that i could light a fire if i really needed to. Believe me if a middle aged person with zero expertise of lighting even a barbeque can do it then ANYONE could use it. The whistle seems fine to me too and you never know when you may need one after all

Good products, great value.
Exactly what it says on the tin. Seems to work great on my test runs, not actually used it to start a fire yet but sparks well and the whistle is compact and works great. Only thing is the cord connecting the flint and striker is just a little bit too short but still functional.

but that said once it gets going it works well - you basically keep scratching until the paint wears off then it's great.
No instructions or tinder in handle as described on packet, but that said once it gets going it works well - you basically keep scratching until the paint wears off then it's great.
