DC Comics The Ultimate Character Guide

Although I bought this book as a gift, a 'Secret Santa' present for someone at work, I have to say that I am very impressed with the quality of 'DC Comics Ultimate Character Guide' myself. Whilst not a great comic book reader (not for many years anyway), I found this to be a very entertaining read, which has actually encouraged me to look into more DC comics.This lavishly illustrated guide, written by Brandon T. Snider, and published in 2011 originally, lists 203 characters in alphabetical order, including superheroes like Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, villains such as Lex Luthor and Cyborg Superman, as well as some who are much more obscure, all in alphabetical order. Each character receives a page each, with a 'Vital Stats' box, a list of all their special powers, and other facts. The well-written biographies are not at all in-depth, and some readers might well care to have read more (although the more educated fans and followers will surely know just about all that there is anyway), but this is still an impressive work, easy-to-read, and just good fun to dip in and out off.I recommend this coffee-table book to anyone who wishes to become introduced to the world of DC, and as Snider himself writes: "The DC Universe is a big place. Start Exploring!" - the aptly-titled 'Ultimate Character Guide' certainly allows you to do just that.

Fantastic guide; well worth the money. I cannot recommend highly enough, especially if the superhero fan you're buying for is a little younger. My son is four years old and cannot read this himself, but it is well written enough to support a reading programme (some superhero literature I have come across is just rubbish). Little people, such as him, will need help with the more advanced words, but you can easily use this to encourage them to sound out words for themselves. The advantage of using this book is that the content itself is gripping for superhero fans.I would guess that if they are around ten years old, you may be better off investing in the larger encyclopedia, but that will set you back near £30.If your budget does not allow, this is definitely the way to go. I am mightily impressed.

Bought this DC character guide as my 11 year old likes comics,it doesn't go over the top with information and gives the right amount of info on each character within the DC world.It aloud my daughter to take in what she wanted and was still filled with a good amount of art for her to enjoy.

Great introduction to DC. The book itself is smaller than I expected and some of the images are rather old now. However its a great buy and a great price.

Fantastic book - gave it to an 11 year old as a present and found it hard to hand over! Really good basic round-up of the main figures in the DC universe. Well worth the money. Good artwork and good is brief facts about each character.

This is a winner my 8year old son is so happy with this book as well as the marvel equivalent. It's got great illustrations and facts and think he will still love it years on I must admit I'm intrigued too. Whenever he watches a cartoon or super hero movie he spends an hour or more reading up on all the hero's and villains. Its a must buy.

This and it's counterpart book, Marvel Avengers were a fantastic buy for £5 each for my son for Christmas. He's 13 soon, but loves his Marvel & DC characters. Full of super illustrations of each character, and information about each one; its allies and enemies, vital statistics etc; it was worth the money just for the illustrations.

This is a very good book that is as up to date (upto 2011), this book definitely gives all the essential information about all the characters heroes, villains & groups, very well written by DC.
