NECA – The Art and Soul of Blade Runner 2049 – Visual Art Hardcover Book

The book straddles a 4- and a 5-star rating. This is not a typical "The Art Of...." book. There are far more photos than concept art and sketches. However, the photos are beautiful, and there are numerous behind-the-scenes shots (e.g. the modeling department creating miniatures) as well as closeups of elements that aren't the main focus of particular scene (e.g., the costumes of background extras in the Bibi's Bar/Market Scene.)The book is separated into chapters that take a closer look into each of the major sets. Interspersed within these chapters are profiles of the main characters.When it comes to the "Soul" mentioned in the book's title, you do get a sense of where Villeneuve was coming from and what he hoped to accomplish. There is some commentary by the film's artists and designers, and the actors portraying the main characters provide a glimpse into the psyche of their characters (and in some cases, how they headed in a direction with their character their character that was different than originally conceived). However, none of the commentary in the book is in-depth - just a couple sentences here and there about a particular aspect of the film.All-in-all, it is a well-done, quality book that dips its toe into a visually and conceptually complex film. And since this is the only BR 2049 book on the market, it's a worthwhile purchase. Hard core fans will find themselves wishing for more; here's hoping that a book or two with deeper dives will eventually be released.On a side note, I was hoping that the book would explain the existence of a bee apiary in the empty streets of Las Vegas. In the book, Villeneuve talks about creating a world and the need to live within the rules of that world. I have to stretch my imagination a bit to logically explain the scene. I've developed a theory that's "good enough" to quell frustration, but I'd like to hear from Villeneuve himself.

There is so much to love about this book, from a the gorgeous and generous size and production values, to the dense and detailed commentary. They interview every character featured (as far as I can tell) for multiple opinions and insights into the story and scenes they are in. Everything from the smallest prop to the largest sets gets as lavish a treatment as you could ever ask for!Worth every dollar it cost and more. This will be pursued and referred back to for many years, as there is just a wealth of information for fans and filmmakers alike.Scenes are carefully detailed and broken down, FX are discussed and also broken down into steps, sets are explained and viewed from concepts all the way through to final shots. Excellent discussion about how the clothing relates to characters as well as the movie's world.

Amazing book! The images and text are great. Lots of interesting insight into the development of the movie from Scott, Villeneuve, and others. But most impressive is the size and quality of the printed book. Pages are crisp and clear with great range of color and value. As others have noted the book follows the order of the movie in its presentation of the material. This is not like the old Star Wars sketchbooks. Like newer art books, this contains many images from the sets and movie but they're so visually striking I believe it works in this instance. Also material to support the images is placed appropriately helping one to understand the process that resulted in the final look. This is a keeper and a must have companion if you loved the movie.

NECA - The Art and Soul of Blade Runner is a fantastic journey to the future, a Hardcover Edition filled with pages of Beautiful Artwork. There are also a variety of Commentaries by the Actors themselves as well as the Production Advisors and other Actors and staff involved in making this amazing movie. There are Conceptual Drawings and Sketches, also Paintings, Photographs and more. You get to see the set models being designed and the Scenery being Created as well as the characters, the costumes, the vehicles and weaponry and you get to have a look at what the living conditions might be like in the not so far off future. There are detailed photographs of the different kinds of masks some people wear, the different kind of shops and stores as well as bars and restaurants in that era. The Visualization in this book to be sure is quite stunning . It is a sure and great treasure to have for any one who is a lover of Sci Fi Noir. An absolute must for any Collector.

The art is beautiful to leaf through. The essays are dynamic and inspiring. The overall depth into the process of creating a large scale budget movie is enlightening. I wish all films would do this -- the good and bad examples -- in order to compare a failure with artistic success. Both are educational. Until then, this book is worth the price and the study.

I see here mixed reviews of this book. I my case, I loved the oversized volume. There are awesome concepts inside as well as photos from the movie. So, there are arts! So many! It is very expensive indeed. Very, because I had to cover for different import fees. But nevertheless, if you really liked the movie, it is an awesome purchase! Go for it before it runs out of print!

This is an incredibly high quality collector's item. I'm glad I spent $40 on it as a gift so that my friend could leave it in a drawer and forget about it indefinitely 2 days after I gave it to him.So pro tip keep this one for yourself, it's that cool

One of the best art of film books I've seen. No expense was spared on the quality of the book and prints and the writing is actually a highlight, not an afterthought. Extensive artwork from the whole process. Fantastic.

Much bigger than I anticipated, pictures with bluray for scale. Colours and detailed artwork is really great. Interesting information about the universe and many of the small details and concepts shown in the movie. 1-day shipping worked well and came sealed in plastic. 100% worth the price 49.94$!
