Q: will this work if your quail are behind chicken wire?

The chicken wire would be to flimsy to hold it by itself!

Q: Is this to big for button quail?

I bought one to use for my coturnix quail. The smaller birds would climb inside the feeder sometimes. Since the lid isn't secured, I was worried they'd figure out how to get out under the lid. I think buttons may have trouble reaching the feed at the bottom of the feeder if they didn't climb in. I think the feeder itself is great, as long as the birds are large enough to not fit through the opening.

Q: Is this fairly waterproof for outdoor quail

I think so. The lids close we'll, but if the feeders are kept in the outside of the enclosure, I'm not sure if a heavy rain could blow the lids upward. These worked really well for us and significantly reduced the food waste, but we kept the quail indoors.
