Prime Cut - Lee Marvin & Gene Hackman [DVD] [1972]

Another great movie with old favourite great action movie highly recommend

White-bread Mid Western farm boys are angering Chicago mobsters by muscling in on their business and sending their representatives back disguised as sausages.Micheal Richie's Prime Cut is one of the oddest and finest crime films of 1970s,taking in everything from Gothic horror, romance, sleaze, shoot em' ups and satire. For once the mob is Irish rather than Italian and the good ole boys are from the heartlands rather than the South. Gene Hackman adopts one of his most sinister beep-eating-grins and delivers pure evil. Lee Marvin handles his machine gun like only a WWII vet could do and is way cooler than even Clint Eastwood was at his height. Sissy Spacek makes a great and surprisingly tough damsel in distress.There are some stunning set pieces. The fire fight in a field full of sun flowers stands out, as does the sight of a cadillac being eaten up by a combine harvester and the grand guignol final confrontation in a barn full of pigs is one of the all time greats.Prime Cut is also an oddly prescient action movie. The concentration on visuals, disinterest in social realism and genre cross-pollination are much more like the concerns of a graphic novel than was the norm in 1970s crime dramas. In other words, a great film that was ahead of its time.The region 1 DVD is in widescreen and features optional subtitles, but no extras.

It's difficult to review a film of this nature that's 50 years old. In 1972, with the censorship at that time, this was considered to be a film to shock, & it did. Since then censorship has gradually relaxed &, because of that, there have been numerous films made over the years which have made Prime Cut look a little tame. Had this been made in the last 5yrs or so this would've been a blood bath with much more nudity & sex, but most likely not starring 2 "A" lister actors, the shock factor being enough to carry the film, or so today's film makers seem to believe. I'm surprised nobody has come up with a remake in all this time, although not disappointed as remakes are rarely as good as the original, as with Straw Dogs, a similar type film to Prime Cut only, in my opinion, better. Another example being The Italian Job. What were they thinking!!I won't give a synopsis of the plot as the other reviews say it all. I will say that, as I was almost old enough to have been allowed in to cinema's upon it's release, I enjoyed this trip down memory lane. Like a lot of young blokes in the 70's these were the films we had on a must see list.

I was very glad to be able to purchase this classic gangster movie ,which shows off Lee Marvin's talent for playing dangerous men.Here he plays a mob enforcer after the truely slimy,nasty Gene Hackman(another great and talented actor) who is engaged in white slavery among other things.Sissy Spacek in her debut as one such victim.Beautifully photographed,especially the final confrontation in the sunflower fields as well as some great set pieces like being chased by a combined harvester.Worth every penny if you love 1970's action movies.

I bought this on blu-ray not long after being on DVD having waited ages to find it on DVD. Sharp and clear but then so was the DVD and in fact I can't see the difference swapping disc to disc. So apart from a slimline box you could stick with the DVD and not lose out, much, if at all.

loved it when it first appeared on our cinema screens and thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. Marvin, Spacek and Hackman all exuded their personalities onto the film. Marvin and 2 cohorts sent from Chicago to the midwest to sort out a charismatic, but nasty, Hackman. Along the way Marvin saves Spacek from a dire situation at the hands of the smiling Hackman. great !

Lee Marvin & Sissy Spacek are great in the starring roles.

...Very good quality for this hard to find movie. Excellent cast in an over-the-top American gangster movie...eg: Gene Hackman as out-of-line boss 'Mary Ann',...a combine harvester eating a Cadillac starting at the front, gunfight in a field of sunflowers, etc. This is also Sissy Spacek's first time as a main character and probably more nudity for her than anytime since?

Il y a ce contraste entre l'élégance de la mise en scène et le sordide du sujet; entre Lee Marvin (impérial) en homme de main classieux et Gene Hackman en patron des bouseux, empereur des rednecks. Tout le film joue sur cette corde raide: "Prime Cut" ne recule devant rien, jusqu'à transformer un homme en chair à saucisse...Mais c'est aussi diablement esthétique, outrageusement beau. Comme la scène anthologique de la moissonneuse-batteuse, décalque terrien de la scène de l'avion de "North by Northwest". Ou la préparation de la vengeance, quand Marvin fourbit ses armes (littéralement) tandis qu'un ciel d'orage gronde dans le pare-brise de la voiture...Sordide, beau et moral. Voilà en somme le programme de "Prime Cut", sorte de quintessence du cinéma d'exploitation. Culte.
