When I received it, it was set up to hold the rod with your right hand and crank the reel with your left hand. I believe that the reel can easily be modified to crank with the right hand if you prefer.

If I recall right, it didn't have any line.

Thank you for your question. The D-Shock combos are most appropriate for use in freshwater, however, with proper cleaning and maintenance they can certainly be used in saltwater as well.
