Grandad's Prayers of the Earth

This is a wonderful book for a young person dealing with the loss of a grandparent. I have loaned our copy out many times over the years. This book is appropriate for kids that are at a higher reading level than this, because it really addresses some very mature issues. In the book, the young boy is told by his grandfather that everything prays - trees reach for the sky, etc. After his grandfather is gone, the boy can't hear their prayers or enjoy nature, until one day he walks in the woods, and understands his grandfather's nature connection, making him feel close to his memory.

This was purchased for a four year old to help ease the pain of loosing her great grandfather. It is very sweet and beautifully illustrated

This book conveys so many wonderful thoughts and ideas. First, it teaches a deep reverance for the natural world. Its approach to prayer speaks to a deep spirituality that recognizes the sacredness and interconnectedness of all living things. It portrays a wonderful intergenerational relationship between grandfather and grandchild. And it captures the beauty of nature and the personal renewal that can occur from a walk in the woods. This is a superb book for children of all ages -- even those 80+ years old.

I have four grandson's, the two oldest are beginning to ask questions, like," What was it like to be a Marine? What was war like?" The book, "Grandad's Prayers," asks the other questions that they haven't thought to ask yet, but are important in their developement as people of impact in this world. This book is a good bedtime read and a good addition to one's collection of children's books.

I love this book! Such a simple, yet complete, definition of prayer and love between a boy and his grandfather.

I read this book to my family the night after my husband's memorial service. Then for Easter that year I gave each of them a book with pictures of him/her with their dad or granddad. Fifteen total! Granddad had loved to take walks to beautiful places with them.I got this book for a friend whose husband had died. A beautiful book!

The Buddha teaches that the more that one says about enlightenment (or about god), the less accurate it is. No, this book is not specific, dictating what prayer is, who prayer should be directed at, or what major words should be repeated until they have no meaning. This book is about prayer. It is about silence. It is about seeing god in all creation. It is about aesthetics. Hesitant with dogma, but abundant in beauty, this book was a marvelous tool to discuss what prayer means with my children.

This is one of my very favourite books.A beautiful lesson in the beauty that surrounds us and of the love of a spiritual grandfather who gives of his time and wisdom . The illustrations speak for themselves. A wonderful gift too.
