Very thorough and detailed book on the gear, life and practices of the mountain man period. To be honest it probably goes into more detail than most people would be interested in. Tons of information on tools, guns, traps, indiantrade goods and lots more, right down to production numbers and makers marks on tools and equipment. Even how goods were packed and transported! Very interesting read if you're into the period.

So far this has been a great read. Thanks to this book I was able to go to a living history event and have an intelligent conversation about axes and understood what was being discussed. Just adds another piece to the puzzle of history and how to portray it. While I would like to see photos of the items discussed, I don't know that they would have done the subject justice as some of the items are no longer in the best condition. One also has to consider when the book was written.

Very informational and seemingly well documented book that I would think essential to western writers, re-enactors and historians. And for folks like me that dream of living in the time of the mountain man.

Enjoy reading it still reading it

The author went into great detail covering the historical era of the mountain man and the fur trade. Detailed accounting of tools and uses with multiple footnotes covering where tools were found and their back stories. Highly recommend for anyone interested in the Mountain Man and Fur Trade era.

Lots of history behind this book.Not a glamour picture book by any means. Not necessarily a how to book either, best for historical purposes and learning about the tools of the trade. Enjoy!

enjoyed the book very much. The drawings were very good. Would have liked some real pictures mixed in with the drawings though.

This is a good book if you want to learn about early mountain man, supplies and gear that they used

Not done reading this book yet but it's worth the money , I was looking more for the guns & trapping & the way of the Mountain man than the American history & the big fur company's but so far it's not bad

If you like the history of the mountain men, Lewis and Clark, or any 18th/19th century pathfinder you’ll want this book.
