Technically, a Blu-Ray budget release of previous versions found on DVD
Nadia, the secret of blue water is in my top 10 must watch anime series of all time. That’s saying a lot since I’ve been watching Japanese animation since before most you kiddos were even born. The early days of the 1980s, when imported VHS tapes were being swapped at sci fi conventions and this ten year old (at the time) discovered that mainstream American dubs of Space Battleship Yamato, for example, were shredded and rewritten for the a North American children’s audience. Nothing has changed. The dubs today on streaming services, just hide it slightly better. It’s really too bad that they continue to try to sell Nadia: The secret of Blue Water by writing on the cover “from that dude who created Neon Genesis Evangelion.” Yes, we know, we get it! That insulting statement pretty much disregards everyone else who put their blood sweat and tears into making the series. Fortunately Nadia has nothing to do with Evangellion, except for the Gainax ties. Hideki Anno was indeed the writer and director and Shiro Sagisu was also the composer, but this is a totally different and brilliant uplifting story, and 98% Family friendly. So Anti-Evangelion in nearly every way. So if you’relooking for more giant robots and totally depressing endings go elsewhere. Don’t get me wrong, I love Evangelion for what it is. Watching the Writer/Director turn his ongoing nervous breakdown into a brilliantly depressing mentally ill series is great! That surreal reality that seems unreally real is why it’s still so popular today. Everyone enjoys being depressed now and again. But sometimes you need a show that just puts a smile on your face every time you watch it. That is Nadia. I could go on for hours about how great the show is, but we need to get to technical details of this current release. Although it says it has been remastered for Blu-ray, I really didn’t see any difference in picture quality between this and the previous release produced by Sentai film works. Furthermore, it takes up five discs, which is the exact same amount of discs it took up when it was previously released on DVD. I doubt Gkids did anything except for a quick one pass, upscale scan, and then slaped it out on Blu-raydisc as quick as possible. But then again you’re talking about an analogue television series which began filming in 1989 and first broadcast in 1990. Would upscaling really help it in any way? Also missing this time around was the bonus soundtrack found in the previous DVD releases. It was disappointing not to see the two disc soundtrack was not included anymore under this new distributor, but it may come down to copyright issues. Final disappointment and this is a big one, would be the lack of any bonus material. This is a much more bare bones release of this Gainax masterpiece, but there are some who believe physical media is dead, and bonus materials doesn’t matter. Yeah right! So that’s alwhy the far superior earlier release on DVD with all kinds of extra goodies, now fetches a premium that is four times as much as its original MSRP in preowned condition. We’re talking hundreds of buckaroonies! And the physical mediacollector market is booming! It’s funny that, even though they say they support physical media, they give modern fans little reason to collect it. Nadia really is a must own, not a binge stream and forget it. Most highly recommended!

Nadia with all the good and the bad
I was a fan of Nadia back in the 90s when it came out. I remember being at the first Anime Expo and video taping (yes onto VHS) the videos when they broadcast it on the hotel TV. But anyway, this Blu-Ray set is excellent for having all the episodes. But it does highlight the problems (and age) of the series. Don't get me wrong, I get to see details I've never seen before with great resolution. But also the mistakes too. And the story and the characters etc all the things that are problems are of course still there. But if you care about the world, the ideas of the mechanics, and the main characters, then it's here in great resolution. Audio isn't the best, except the open and end songs, but good enough. If you are an old fan like me, then buy it. Also much cheaper in this set than trying to get the Japanese set.

Beautiful
I bought Nadia years ago and was very disappointed in the picture quality of the Sentai release. Decided to go ahead and rebuy the GKids version and I'm glad that I did as the picture quality is amazingly clean compared to Sentai's version. Not much to say other than if you're disappointed like I was, then get this version as its worth it. If not, then keep the old version as that's pretty much the only reason to get this release. Pros: 1. Way better picture quality. 2. A super, super small booklet is now included with this release. Cons: 1. No beginning chapter stops as it just skips to the middle of the episode. As I person that usually skips the opening and ending credits, this was a huge letdown. 2. White subtitles as I find yellow subtitles easier to read, especially on light / white backgrounds. Nothing wrong with white subs, I just prefer yellow. 3. Still waiting on Nadia: the Motion Picture to be on blu ray.
