Under Michigan: The Geology Story
Under Michigan: The Story of Michigan's Rocks and Fossils was really not what I was looking for when planning a trip to that state. As others may have said, it is more suitable for grade school students than geology buffs. I was hoping it would be more detailed, like those Roadside Geology series books. I did find it interesting though and was able to collect some Petoskey Stones. They were easier to find in a gift shop than along the beach.

Great resource for Michigan families and classes
This book is used in our science classes at Middle School. I read it and wanted a copy for my family too. It is a great tool for understanding how the beautiful state of Michigan came to be!

The Land Beneath the State of Michigan
This is another fascinating book written for children but appealing to adults by the same author of "The Day the Great Lakes Drained Away" (my favorite of the two). This book is a little deeper than the lakes books, as it focuses more on geology. Even so, the simple drawings and explanations of how the state was formed and why land areas are shaped the way they are is interesting and factual reading.

Missing the mid-continent rift (aulacogen)!!
Where is the mid-continent rift??"The Midcontinent Rift, which started but failed to split North America in two pieces 1.1 billion years ago, is the biggest failed rift ever discovered. It was formed when 350,000 cubic miles of volcanic rock poured out of the rift and formed the beautiful cliffs around Lake Superior."John McPhee: "On modern gravity maps and magnetic maps of North America, it is the single most prominent feature that you see."
