Q: Does the Natural Hoof Shoe rub raw places and is it padded?

If they get wet or are left on too long, they will rub. They don't rub as much as the hoof boots made of rubber. They stay on without turning fairly well. I like them because they're very easy to put on. They come with a thin removable pad for the sole, but it's not worth much. I got a foam pad from my farrier and cut it to size.

Q: My horse's hoof measured 5.5 inches. Anyone know what size 1, 2, 3, or bigger?

Size 2 goes from 5 1/4' to 5 1/2" Size 3 goes from 5 1/2" to 6" Measurement is taken diagonally from the corner of the heel to the corner of the toe. Round up your measurement. My horse measured 5.5" and I found for turnout the size 2 worked better than the size 3. If he is stall bound, the 3 would work but would need to be stuffed to keep it from shifting. I found this to be a truly amazing boot, easy to put on and easy on his foot. BJL46

Q: Will these work well for light to medium riding in an arena?

I only used them for turnout. They stayed on pretty well. I think, if the fit is right, that light riding would be OK.

Q: how well do these hold up?

I used this boot over medication and bandages for our aged horse who had a chronic abcess. He lived in it 24/7 and could go up and down a fairly steep hill to get to pasture and most times it stayed on well. Mud, when it rained, was hard on the fabric part but the boots did wash ok. We went through many boots over 2-3 years. Sometimes holes developed. Sometimes the fabric frayed. Some were repairable, some were not. One fairly new boot had the rubber sole separate from the fabric. The horse roamed pasture with it but we didn't ride him so I can't say how it would do on the trail. While not part of your question, I did find the size variation could be a problem. I also bought this hoof shoe under different company names so can't tell for sure which brand name was involved with which issues. They all looked identical except for the label. For our use, I never found a better alternative.
