As much as people such as myself would wish that someone with the vocal and interpretive abilities of Toni Braxton would record an album that sounded like....oh say Diana Ross or Chaka Khan circa 1980,fact is it's not going to happen. Toni is a modern,Grammy winning recording artist and if she made a record like that without very carefully thinking about it her new fans would probably see her as pandering to her parents generation and that generation would likely not take her very seriously. Now of course being this album is firmly in the modern idiom it does have it's flaws,mostly in the area of production. Much of the synthesizer programming is beyond clished and the same goes for the hip-hop styled "HO HO!!" chants that seemed to b delivered on this and almost every modern R&B album made in the past decade. In terms of Toni Braxton though this music delivered some new flavors into her style. Now this is not her first post millenium styled R&B album but the music marks a definate return to her original strenghs during the LeFace years;that is dramatic orchestration and strong song construction. Also there are a lot of mid to uptempo songs here that don't rely and it doesn't rely a lot on slower songs. "Yesterday","If I Had To Wait","Lookin' At Me" and "Wardrobe" all fit nicely into that catagory. Her lyrical focus has also made a change. She's no longer in the swoony,melodramatic mode she was in during the peak her her commercial and creative powers and is asking questions about what romance means to woman entering middle age and in a world that still seems fixated on the idea that female R&B "divas" won't have much of a life past 30 except to try and prove they can still be "with it". So there's a lot of uncertainly expressed here and in the end she comes to the conclusion that her own strenghs are what makes her music special and always will. This is evidanced by the slower songs that close out the album with "No Way",the soulful title song and the beautiful "Why Won't You Love Me". "Make My Heart" actually surprises me in it's heavy use of funk horn breaks and a great sense of polyrhythm. It's so compulsive it makes you wish about half the songs on the album continued in this vein but that wasn't really the point. There will likely be those out there who will always give Braxton a rough time for making music usually associated with many of the cookie cutter,generic female R&B stars now most of whom are just trying to imitate Beyonce is some way. But only the song "Woman" kind of does that here and once you really take the time to get into the album it's very musically rewarding in a lot of ways.

Toni Braxton ist zurück. 5 Jahre nach ihrem letzten Studioalbum "Libra" geht sie mit "Pulse" wieder an den Start.Was soll ich sagen? Das Warten hat sich DEFINITIV gelohnt!Als wäre sie nie weg gewesen, haut Toni auf ihrem neuen Album stimmlich dermaßen vom Hocker, dass man Gänsehaut bekommt. Ihre unglaublich warme, sinnliche Stimme, ist nach wie vor zu 100 % da und das beweist sie auch eindrucksvoll.Toni nimmt den Hörer mit, auf eine gut 45 minütige Reise durch traumhafte Balladen und unerwartet tanzbare Songs, die einem nicht mehr aus dem Kopf gehen wollen. Die Mischung machts: Langeweile kommt garantiert keine auf, die Reihenfolge der Songs ist perfekt gewählt.Meine persönlichen Anspieltipps sind Yesterday, Make My Heart, Hands Tied, Woman, Lookin' At Me, Hero und der phantastische Titelsong Pulse. Der letztgenannte Song hat sich bei mir, noch direkt am Erscheinugstag, als meistgespielter Track des Albums entpuppt.Wie einige wissen, wurde der Release von Pulse immer wieder nach hinten verschoben. Nicht zuletzt, weil 2009 nach und nach so gut wie alle Songs des Albums im Internet aufgetaucht sind. So sah man sich gezwungen wieder ins Tonstudio zu gehen, um neues Material aufzunehmen. Die Gelduld der Fans wurde auf eine harte Probe gestellt. Nun, wie ich bereits sagte, das Warten hat sich gelohnt... Allerdings bedauere ich sehr, dass es der unglaublich gute Song "Clockwork" nicht mehr auf das letztendlich veröffentlichte Album geschafft hat. Für mich der beste Track der ursprünglichen Albumversion und definitiv Hitmaterial.Trotz diesem kleinen Wehmutstropfen, möchte ich dringend zum Kauf dieses tollen Albums raten. Ich empfehle auch wärmstens die Deluxe-Download-Version mit tollen Bonustracks, wie Rewind und Stay, und Videoclips.Ich hoffe sehr, dass dieses Album den Erfolg haben wird, den es verdient. Ich möchte in Zukunft wieder mehr von dieser Frau sehen und hören. In diesem Sinne: 5 STERNE!
