The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Middle School (Worst Case Scenario Junior Editions)

Love / Hate
This book is perfectly designed for the intended age. It is funny, silly, and really engaging.Unfortunately, the author's went to school too long ago to grasp the current realities. Many of these concerns have been addressed in modern schools, and even if they haven't, parts of the book are way scary. I may be misremembering, but I think there was a bit about finding a different bathroom if there was a group smoking in the one you went into. Almost all of the book was great, and silly enough to not scare kids, but I was planning this as a gift to a student leaving a small elementary for a large middle.

Happy with my purchase
Bought this for a child who we know who seems to be having trouble with Middle School. He seemed to really like it. I know it's hard for parents to pull boys aside to ask the right questions about their kids feelings without feeling like they are giving the child the right amount of personal space. My girlfriend seemed to be having trouble figuring out why she wasn't getting through to her son and he seemed really depressed over school. I gave this to him and told him it was for him and made a joke telling my girlfriend it was 'his' business and that it was his book and don't be reading it. lol He smiled and really seemed to enjoy paging through it. i'm hoping it helps him and he feels more self confident with middle school.

Middle school is going to be scary at first but this book will help change your mind about it and get you through it like a PRO!
I liked how it showed "survival tips" for the dressing rooms in middle school (locker room). The book said that there wasn't "stalls" for changing so you have to do it in the open. So annoying, right? But the book took a funny approach with these tips: Do it in steps. DON'T (under any circumstances) LOOK at ANYONE else, this is your opportunity to be a speed demon, and apparently it is supposed to get easier. Also good to remember that everyone else is probably feeling just as awkward as you are unless they live in a nudist colony?! Other topics worth mentioning: how to challenge a cheater, (don't listen to the cheater's pleas for help, just say no!, whether it's HW or a test... don't go down in flames to be "popular" because they are just using you,) and how to rescue a sinking grade.... find a study buddy, ask your teacher for help (GASP!?!). I know it sounds crazy but this book will help make sense of all these situations with an approach that won't freak you out. It's a good read. (age 11, starting middle school in 2 weeks.?! O M G)

Worst Case Scenario Review
I think this book expands on middle school issues and is informative. It addresses school situations with teachers, peers, homework, the locker room, grades, organization of school work, school dances, packing your backpack properly, social aspects of school, safety issues, and a section for boys only and girls only. It is an easy read for your middle school aged child. The book is organized and written in a fun manner. It is appropriate for a 6th grader since there is not a section on sex.

It has fun and informative text written in the worst case scenario ...
My 7th grade son loves this book and won't let me read it (but of course I did). It has fun and informative text written in the worst case scenario style with pictures as well. He said it really has helped him cope with situations at school. Thankful to find a good book we BOTH like!
