Across Dura-Ace 9100, Shimano made subtle, rather than monumental, shifts in design to improve a system that was already pretty damn good. Proving that mechanical drivetrains can--and still should--be improved, Shimano focused most of its attention on the derailleurs, making the biggest changes to ride experience with important tweaks to both the front and rear derailleurs' designs. The resulting Dura-Ace FD-R9100 11-Speed Front Derailleur delivers concrete improvements to its predecessor's shortcomings, behaving far more consistently than its often moody forebears, whose changes in attitude could be set off by cable entry angles and cable tension that didn't suit it. How'd they do it? Not by magic, though sometimes we wonder. No, Shimano found a way to redesign the body of the derailleur, equipping it with a new linkage system and integrated cable tension adjuster that does away with the need for a barrel adjuster. The design embraces multiple routing options that its previous version wouldn't dream of allowing, and requires low rider effort to generate precise, crisp shifts. Key big ring shifts in the heated moments of a race are no longer just possible within a strict set of parameters; now, you'll only have to lift a finger. Plus, the derailleur's more compact internals mean that the entire body has shrunk, increasing clearance and eliminating the infuriating cable rub that has irritated many of us to our limits at some point in our cycling careers.

It's silver not black
The photo on the website appears to be a black mechanism, which I was excited about since it would match nicely with the Dura-ace crank. But it's not; the cage is silver. It must be the lighting.

Great shifting
Great shifting. Just be careful to follow Shimano's instructions (which were not included) exactly on installation and cable tensioning. Also be aware that my braze-on FD did not ship with required backup plates and needed to be purchased separately, sold as Shimano part number Y5ZS98040, "Dura-Ace FD-R9100 Front Derailleur Support Bolt and Plates". If you do not properly preload the FD with the support bolt pressing against a backup plate, your shifting performance will suffer at best, and at worst you will damage your frame.

Great
Replaced the Ultegra 6800 FD on my CX bike with this one. This thing is great, it shifts surprisingly smooth, and unlike the old FD it doesn't have that giant swing arm that kept rubbing my calf. I'd have gotten the Ultegra version but it wasn't available on Amazon at the time. The only problem was that it was a pain to set up- the directions that came with this thing are totally worthless. I could see this thing picking up a lot more mud too, but I'll take that over the clearance issues I was having with the other FD.

The best mechanical front shifting from Shimano, with less finickiness!
This is an exceptionally awesome front derailleur. Set-up is a little tricky (as most front derailleurs are nowadays) but it provides smooth, rapid and reassuring front shifts both up and down the crankset. It is (arguably) easier to setup and adjust when compared to the older generation DA/Ultegra/105 front derailleurs with the long arm as it is more tolerant of poor cable entry angles (you no longer have to use a special tool to judge initial setup of the derailleur). And it provides a method for adjusting cable tension without a barrel adjuster (surprisingly useful feature). I currently use the FD with 105 shifters which, while not providing the best cable actuation, provides an absolutely awesome shifting feel. If you have any of the latest Shimano 11sp road groups this is an excellent upgrade to make.My current setup with this derailleur is listed below.CAAD10 54cmSRAM RED GXP crankset, compact gearing (50/34)SRAM RED PC1190 chainShimano 105 shiftersStandard Shimano Shift housing & CablesPlease note that the best part about this front derailleur is that it is backwards compatible with all Shimano 11sp road groupsets (DA/Ultegra/105) making it an excellent upgrade to even your 105 equipped machines, especially if you have trouble setting up and maintaining good front shifting (Which I was).
