Quintessential Marvel classic. A Masterclass for Artists
Quintessential Marvel Classic. Required Reading for all and a masterclass for Artists.Gil Kane was at the top of his game on this series—both plotting and drawing. Stan was still writing the book himself when this run began—which really meant discussing ideas with Gil and then writing dialogue to fit Gil’s pencils—but the Stan Lee magic is there, and it’s some of his best (most Stan Lee-esque) stuff too!Stan and Gil’s unlikely marriage is sanctified by John Romita’s elegant, juicy, brush inking that gives these masterpieces their quintessentially MARVEL signature look. To be fair, Frank Giacoia inked a few stories—also brushy and juicy. However, an unsung hero who contributed indispensably to these classic stories was uncredited backgrounds assistant Tony Mortellaro.I know nothing about Tony Mortellaro or his career—except that he drew some of the most evocative backgrounds behind Gil Kane’s stunning action. More than any other artist, Tony gave us the rooftop-and-watertower perspective on New York City that we all associate with Spidey and Marvel today. His was the New York I went searching for when I moved to NYC in 1980 and began my trespassive urban explorations that formed the basis of my reference file that I stilll use for drawing cities today. My point is, this book is a treasure! Anyone who loves Spiderman, Marvel Comics, or just excellent, inventive visual storytelling will want to own this.

Beautiful book if you’re into original art.
I have no idea how they collected so much of the original art, but it’s a wonderful surprise. It’s a must-have for fans.

Loved it, a great learning tool & art book; but it's smaller than original page size…
I was ecstatic to find these great reproductions of the original art that was used in Marvel classic comics, that I had been drooling about for years. And happily I had been given several gifts cards, and decided to pick up one of the books as a late birthday gift for me. I had a feeling the price I scored on the book might mean what I discovered it was, but the book showcases the art not at the original page size they were created at which was 10x15, but a smaller dimension of 8.5x12… the size discrepancy isn't mentioned. That being written, while its smaller then I hoped, the production of the book is great like their other editions, and if you can't afford to own history, this is as close as you get. … so I'll be happy, with it, and next time make sure I find a title, that is the original page size, perhaps those only occur with the hard cover editions.

Masterful!
Mr. Kane has been working in some capacity in comics for more years and produced beautiful work all that time. His art has slightly changed over his years, but always coming away with great storytelling work. Seeing his Spider-Man work is a pleasure in this book!
