Andre Talks Hair

If you want to search for hair types and know their descriptions. This book isn't for you. You are better off to search the internets which give more in depth than Andre. He gives a better description of 1-3 Hair Types than 4 Hair Types. I was heavy disappointed that he only use the 4 hair types representation that only three (black) women that was sporting a low fade, a woman with a curly wig, and dread locs. You can't fool me with hair extensions or hair wigs. I know the difference between real hair, hair weaves, and hair wigs. You cannot see the curl pattern and the luster level (think shiny or hair that has sheen) of the hair with these hairstyles. I believe Andre is hypocritical because he said, "put the notion of good hair and bad hair to the side", but he recommended women with 4 hair types to get texturizers and relaxers. However, he does give great info on how to peep a bad hairstylist from a good hairstylist; in addition, how to know and be professional with a hair stylist. He doesn't give in depth on what hair ingredients to avoid and what is recommended in hair care. For the hair for all hair types he only recommended certain shampoos and conditioners, but don't go in depth like what hair types (like 4 hair type) need a moisturizer (think moisturizing hair lotion). He didn't address what kind of hair care products and hair styling products to use and what to avoid for each hair type. I'm not sure I know this book was made in 1997, but I know hair with bounce, fullness, and volume was in. I'm wondering if he curled one of the models (with 3 hair type) with curling iron, if so, that not the representation of the hair type in its natural state. It will be helpful if he shown how each hair type looked natural, texturized, permed, and relaxed. I'm glad he made it to be one of the top hairstylists in celeb world, but I think his book was waste of my money. I could've used common sense and talked to local hairstylist to get this information. Trust me, it nothing spectacular. You aren't missing anything.

"Andre Talks Hair" is an excellent resource for hair care. Andre starts his discussion with two "get to know your hair" chapters. From there, he gradually and simply "talks" good hair care from the perfect cut, to using chemicals to caring for gray hair (my issue), to dealing with hair that as been damaged,and of course, a chapter discussing how to take your hair into your own hands and doing the job yourself (which is where I am at this time). Yes, he does do a great job on coloring one's hair. It is not an "ethnic" haircare book. Every lady, regardless of her ethnicity, will find her hair in this book. A great read and a great price. Oh yes, the foreword by Oprah Winfrey is a great stamp of approval! Andre Talks Hair!

I almost missed this book because I thought it was primarily for African-American women. I learned that all the years of longing for my hair to look a certain way were wasted - because I'll never have that look without a lot of work every single day. Such a relief to learn I wasn't crazy - and a gift to get specific recommendations about how I could work with it successfully. And, if you have wiry or curly hair, this book is a MUST> I purchased this copy to give to a friend, and I'm sure she'll be thrilled as much as I am.

This book was somewhat boring. He didnt go into details as I expected. When i got to the middle of the book, I just put it on the shelf. Such a waste.

I have to agree with the negative reviews, unfortunately. I don't mind having it in my collection, but there really wasn't any ground-breaking information in it. It was the same information one would hear anywhere else, if not just common knowledge.

Images native and informative. Enjoyed learning about a subject I knew little about. Andre writes with a flair and brings hair alive.
