Gotham High

An Intriguing Re-Imagining of Our Favourite Superhero and Villains <3
(I voluntarily reviewed an eARC of the book on For The Love of Fictional Worlds)This graphic novel takes the famous and iconic Batman characters and re-imagines them as young adults; trying to survive the murky waters of high school – which we all know can be very unforgiving! And like all the young adult books that we are so accustomed to; there are some, if not all predictive cliché that we would come toe expect, even with our beloved comic characters! But it is the author’s own interpretation to the characters that will capture your attention and never let go!In this new DC YA Comic; Bruce Wayne is half Asian and Alfred (the butler!) is now Bruce’s gay uncle, who is married. Awesome isn’t it? These facts pretty much cemented my interest in the comic, immediately! Now that Bruce Wayne is back in Gotham City – and when a young man, a classmate of Bruce is kidnapped for ransom while wearing Bruce’s jacket, he knows that things are going to get dicey but even he wouldn’t have been able to imagine not predict how and where the solution to the mystery would lead him to!So, beyond the wonderfully diverse representation – the plotline is quite straightforward, if not predictable – but it is the artwork that gives off the mysterious vibes and captures the attention of the reader + makes this new comic series worth your time and keep an eye out for future volumes!

Terrible
I got to the end and it was predictable. I was totally disappointed. Mysteries are fun because there are plot twists. This plot twist you could see coming a mile away. The solutions are silly. The characters are shallow. They introduce some interesting changes in character to add some flavor to the story and it doesn't impact it at all. "Gotham" made a much better job with teenage Bruce and Selina than this.Painful to read.

Don't Feed the Bigots
Ignore any reviewer bringing up the non-traditional race and gender changes of the characters. Any comic fan worth attention knows to respect a multi-verse, and this story makes it clear that it's in an entirely separate universe than the one with the same boring Batman story. Whiteness isn’t a character trait, and if it was, they have plenty of white Batmen to choose from. Also, ignore any reviewer who was looking for “The Killing Joke” in a story quite clearly marked “YA.” In case any of them didn’t know what they were getting into, it is clearly called “Gotham High.” The blurbs and cover art let you know what to expect before you even get to page one. Beware almost any adult who goes out of their way to slam teen fiction.I liked this story. The take was fresh, the characters were interesting. It was well written and well drawn. I’d say the only drawback for me was that there weren’t very many suspects for the crime in question and I would’ve liked to suspect more people before the culprit was revealed. If you’re a fan of “Smallville” and “Riverdale”, this is the graphic novel for you. I hope they produce more, maybe even turn it into a TV show.
