Ghostbusters Volume 1 (Ongoing (2012-2014))

Ghostbusters is easily one of the most successful, recognizable, and beloved franchises to emerge from the 1980's. To date, it's spawned a sequel, three cartoon series, toys, Halloween costumes, at least three video games, and I'm pretty certain there was a breakfast cereal out there somewhere. For those of us who grew up dreaming of advanced degrees in parapsychology and psychology, the franchise sacred ground, which is exactly why, in the wrong hands, a Ghostbusters graphic novel could have gone horribly wrong.Fortunately, it didn't. To cite another 80's icon, the authors pulled an Indiana Jones, lovingly excavating every disparate shard of the franchise, dusting it off, cataloging it, and piecing it together in a mosaic canon whose whole was far greater than the sum of its parts. Remember every line of the movie? So do they. Remember that horrible cartoon with the gorilla or the terrible NES game? Both are referenced. This is what makes the graphics novels work: they love their subject matter as much as those of us growing up with it do.

It isn't often I find myself reading something and thinking "I really wish that took longer." but I really would have loved to spend more time reading Burnham and Shoening's Ghostbusters title. They bring together all the best aspects of the two movies, the video game (which was spectacular), and expands upon the storylines therein. They bring back old characters and (more impressively) introduce new characters who do not seem shoe-horned into the story but add definite value to the plot. The long-term story arc pays off nicely while sprinkling in many, many references to the original source material along with some SNL-based cameos that might slip under some people's radar.While I have no problem with the upcoming Ghostbusters movie featuring an all-female leading cast (with some awesome people attached to star), it is a huge error to make it a re-boot rather than a sequel. This comic easily demonstrates that it is absolutely natural to have new characters join the existing crew as franchise-owners in a different location. Seriously, don't reboot it, follow Erik Burnham's example and add to it!

If you are even a slight fan of the Ghosbusters films, video game or animated series then this is a MUST OWN for you! This series is as close as Ghostbusters fans will most likely ever come to a quality sequel. When you're reading the book you can hear the voices of Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis in your head. The writer absolutely nails the personalities of all the Ghostbusters characters and the art is PERFECT! Its a great mix of the animated series with a modern spin and features the characters looking more movie accurate than in the cartoon (no blond rat tail for Egon)The book is also LOADED with little Easter eggs through out so its great for repeat readings. I absolutely cannot reccomend this enough if you are a fan of Ghostbusters, 80's comedies, or comic books in general. It's worth every penny and you'll be hooked and looking for Volume 2 in no time!

The writer must be complimented, he did a spot on job with the dialogue. I also love the art, it may look a little cartoony but it really captures the emotion of the characters better than many of the other art styles I used in Ghostbusters comics. The plot revolved around Gozer again, so those looking for something completely new may be disappointed. That said, it did new things with the story and I wasn't disappointed. It counts both movies and the video game as canon, and has many cute nods to the Real Ghostbusters and other movies in the original actors careers.Everyone I know who read this wasn't raving that it was the best thing ever, but they all wanted to read the next one immediately so I think it's one of those reads where you enjoy it more than you realize.

First of all, I've been a Ghostbusters fan since i was three, so I may be a bit biased. That being said, I can honestly say that I was blown away by the caliber of this series. It combines the history of the movies, the cartoons, the game, and even comics that came before. Throughout each issue if you look carefully you can spot tiny references to many episodes of the Real Ghostbusters. A great first arc dealing with the first "big bad" of the series, Gozer. I never really found the previous ghostbusters comics to really add anything new to the series. Fans of Ghostbusters will be truly happy with this series.My only disappointment is that there are only 4 issues collected in this volume. But all in all, I have no complaints for this book. It was a lot of fun to pick out all the tiny references that I remember seeing during my childhood. I've already ordered Volume 2 of this series and have nothing but great expectations for this series.

I just found it to be a fun light read. Enjoyed the art and the story goofy and lite enough to keep me interested.

I have only been reading comics for a couple of years. I've been a Ghostbusters fan since '84. Love the first two movies and the video game. So it's great that this comic picks up right after that. The only complaint is that it ended on a "To Be Continued"! Just like a comic book! I plan to get the second one at some point to continue the story. You can really hear the guys voices when you read through it.

Super cool books. My 7 year old is obsessed with Ghostbusters.. I don't even know how that started but he's crazy about the old and the new. He loved these books. They are super cool, comic book style and heavy duty. Great quality.

The new Ghostbusters series from IDW is another example of how smaller, so-called 'indy' properties are actually putting together far stronger comic books than the vast majority of the industry leaders. IDW in particular is doing a great job of bringing properties to fans - what with the excellent new take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, their work with the Transformers and GI Joe properties, and their own series, such as Locke and Key.The appeal of Ghostbusters is difficult to describe. The films are naturally a slice of high-concept comedy with great performances from all involved, but that 80's flavour is incredibly important; Given all the rumours surrounding Ghostbusters 3 as a film in development, it almost sounds like Akroyd and his contemporaries have lost touch with what made the first two films great; They don't need to update Ghostbusters with more modern humour or visuals - That was the beauty of the 2010 videogame, which did a fantastic job of capturing the feel of the films. These comic books do exactly the same thing. The characters are pitch perfect, and that feel of comedy mixed in with occasionally genuinely scary horror is there in force. Some may be turned off by the visuals - which are quite cartoonish, but I think I prefer the kind of style employed in the book to an artist trying to make the characters look exactly like the actors playing them.But this is a great book. With this and the recent videogame, it's a great time to be a Ghostbusters fan. Like the game, this book deals with a handful of plot threads from the first film - in particular, what makes Ray so special? No spoilers, but it's genuinely interesting. The book doesn't contradict either film, too, and actively sits alongside the videogame's narrative and IDW's own 'Infestation' event, which this book has now actively gotten me interested in. There's also a number smart cameos (including a great one from another Dan Akroyd franchise) and jokes - fans might get a chuckle out of a line or two from Venkman about golfing, which is, of course, one of Bill Murray's more famous hobbies.Essentially, I can't recommend this enough. It plays fantastically with established Ghostbusters mythology and just feels right. If bustin' makes you feel good and you don't see the need to wait for a film that might never get made, this is for you.

As a Ghostbusters fan boy i was very excited by getting this book.This is a very worthy entry into the franchise. set sometime after the events of 'Ghostbusters: the video game'. It's a great story with really nice art work.

Aufgrund einer kleinen Nostalgie-Anwandlung, entschied ich mich, den Ghostbuster Volume 1 Comic zu bestellen und muss sagen, dass sich mein Spaß beim Lesen in Grenzen gehalten hat.Die Geschichte ist relativ flach erzählt und vorhersehbar, die Charaktäre sind sehr überzeichnet. Klar, das sind die Ghostbusters und nicht Edgar Allen Po, aber etwas Innovation und Erzähltiefe hätte ich mir dann doch gewünscht.Die Zeichnungen sind gut gelungen, auch die modernisierten Geisterjäger lassen noch die Ursprünge erkennen.Das Englisch ist relativ anspruchsvoll und enthält viele Slang-Begriffe, die Menschen mit nur Schul-Englisch-Kentnissen wohl relativ ratlos zurücklassen werden. Wer sich auch gerne mal Serien oder Filme im Originalton anschaut, kann hier aber getrost zugreifen.Der Comic hat mich alles in allem nicht vom Hocker gehauen, aber war auch kein verschwendetes Geld. Hardcore-Fans können bedenkenlos zugreifen.
