A Haunting Story
I grew up 1.5 miles from where this happened. I was 2 weeks shy of my 3rd birthday and it was is my first real memory of my childhood. We were on the lower income spectrum, but we had a TV (11 inch screen) because my dad repaired TVs and radios. Neighbors came to watch our TV. I think I identified with her because of the age, the nearness, and the almost non-stop TV coverage. For the next 72 years I have thought about Kathy, mentioned her to people and felt like I was the only one who remembered this story and its impact. So I was very excited to see the book reviewed in the paper and bought it that night. If you are from that area there is a lot of very interesting history about the locale - the San Pasqual ranch, the Huntington's, the water issues. And there is a lot of detail about the rescue attempt. Her family doctor was our family doctor (didn't know that until now). There are a lot of photos that add to the story. It was really was the first personal global story. It is a short read. Sometime the transitions to various aspects of the story are a little rough, but overall it is an interesting telling of a very sad story

Well Written
My mother used to talk about little Kathy Fiscus. This whole tragedy occurred behind my uncles house in San Marino, CA. My mom was 21 at the time and remembers watching from the backyard. It was a very sad time for for everyone in that neighborhood. This author has a lot of details on the whole rescue operation including the names of those brave men who went above and beyond and risked their own lives to save little Kathy. Very well written.
