Essential Words for the TOEFL (Barron's Test Prep)

This book provides a decent starting point for those whose vocabulary repertoires are not advanced. I compared the vocabulary in this book with those in other similarly rated TOEFL books/box sets and found that 90% of the words in this did not appear in others. The words in this book were considerably easier, and only a few upper level vocabulary words coincided with those in other materials. Just as examples, words or phrases such as "atypical," "preclude," "with regard to," were not explained here (and only half the time in other books), but appeared on the exam. That said, this book is still useful for those whose vocabulary are limited. If you don't know the words in this book, this is a good starting point. They commonly show up in daily life.As for the format, after a relatively long intro to the exam, book, and how to study, the lessons begin (totaling 30 lessons) with approximately 17 words each lesson. They are short and provide some exercises after.

I bought this book because my TOEFL course required it for the class. I must say I never used it inside or outside the class. I feel this book shows you good vocabulary in different contexts to analyze the correct meaning, it has new vocabulary for preparing a good writing text, I wouldn’t say this works as a training for reading, because the examples are not according with the complexity of TOEFL. I feel TOEFL reading has an academic vocabulary which I can’t find completely in this book.

This book undoubtedly helped me with the dreaded TOEFL exam. Its up-to-date exercises, model essays, and in-depth vocabulary review gave me the knowledge and confidence necessary to pass my test. Beyond that, it remains a helpful guide to retain those essential words necessary to master fluent language. It'll always have a place on my bookshelf, and I couldn't be happier with this pick, among the several manuals out there.

El diccionario es un libro normal que cumple con la función de aprender las palabras más comunes para prepararse para el TOEFL, me agrada que tiene el vocablo, variantes y sinónimos además de oraciones que permiten identificar el contexto en el que se utiliza y como refuerzo de cada lección hay ejercicios de comprensión lectora.

El libro es indispensable si quieres lograr un buen puntaje en el TOEFL. Trae muchos términos y palabras que te servirán de mucho para pasar la prueba.

I bought this book in order to prepare for the TOEFL. I had great scores on reading, listening and writing. Because the posting format of the internet is so peculiar, I had not practiced with a great variety of words for a while. I both learned and remembered uncommon words, which was, for me, the core value of the book.
