Ann Cameron, Selkie
I was really surprised by this book as I know Ann Cameron as a teller of stories from her own native West Coast Canadian tradition, so I thought I was going to read something about Irish and Scottish Selkie tales transported into another culture on a rugged and stormy coast of a different continent, but although this is set in that part of the world and draws on traditional themes, it is a contemporary novel more in the style of Jeanette Winterstone than a traditionial storyteller. Once I got over the shock I really enjoyed this powerful tale about the harsh lives of women over the generations in one part of Canada. She uses vision, dream, hallucination even to flit through time while tracing one woman's journey to herself.
